There are indications that two popular game modes might soon return to CoD: Modern Warfare 2. Apparently, icons have surfaced in the game files that can be attributed to the modes “Plunder” and “Cranked”.
What happened? In recent days, a handful of screenshots circulated on Twitter. These images show game icons that the community quickly identified as “Plunder” and “Cranked”.
The screenshots were published by the Twitter account @BKTOOR, a CoD leaker who had made headlines during the time of Modern Warfare (2019). Back then, he was often right with his assumptions and could predict content accurately long before it was officially announced.
Are there any other hints? Yes, particularly interesting is that this new information aligns with leaks that caused a stir in the community last December. At that time, a YouTube video got players hoping for a comeback of the modes, showing a multiplayer map from Modern Warfare 2. Instead of the tooltips for ammunition depots, the icons, however, show the tooltip “Call in Cash Deposit Heli”. The “Cash Deposit Heli” was a core feature of the Plunder mode from WZ1.
While the mentioned YouTube video remains available, the latest screenshots from Twitter user BKTOOR have since been removed due to a copyright claim.

Comeback of “old” gameplay modes in Modern Warfare 2
What are these game modes? The “Plunder” mode was an alternative to the classic battle royale mode Warzone on the large map. The goal was to collect as much cash as possible in a match. Players had to loot, complete contracts, and steal money from opponents. The squad with the most cash won the match.
In this mode, players started with their loadout, and searching for suitable weapons was largely eliminated. Compared to Warzone, there was no Gulag: If players were eliminated, they could re-enter the game after a short countdown.
On the other hand, “Cranked” is a game mode for classic multiplayer, similar to Team Deathmatch. It provides fast-paced, action-packed gameplay. Whenever you get a kill, you receive a bonus to your movement speed, aiming, and reloading. If you don’t get another kill within 30 seconds, your operator explodes, and you lose the bonuses.

Community demands old modes and new maps
Are the old game modes coming back? This has not yet been confirmed. However, the community has been speculating for some time that additional game modes might come to Modern Warfare 2 with the new season. The Battle Pass of Season 1 ends in early February, and by then there will be official information about new content.
Regardless, large parts of the community want the old game modes back. Besides the Plunder mode, players are also repeatedly calling for a comeback of “Resurgence.” This mini-royale format usually played on the smaller maps Rebirth Island and Fortune’s Keep.

The Plunder mode, which is a bit more relaxed compared to battle royale, and the Resurgence mode on smaller maps seem to offer exactly this variety. MeinMMO reader Viktor Frankenstein feels similarly. In a comment, he explained why WZ2 is already “dead” for him:
For me, Warzone 2.0 is also ‘dead’ because there is no longer a Plunder mode, and also no Rebirth Island. Battle royale was and is simply a boring mode for me and my buddies, which is why we only played Plunder and Rebirth Island. We haven’t played Warzone 2.0 for a month now, and DMZ is unfortunately not as interesting and exciting as we initially hoped.
