1. What is “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” about?
In the dystopian state of Panem, young Coriolanus Snow fights for the fate of his once-powerful family. To do so, he must ensure that his tribute performs as well as possible in the deadly “Hunger Games” as a mentor.
To his dismay, however, he is assigned a girl from the rundown “District 12”, Lucy Gray Baird. The fate of both is now inextricably linked, as life and death are at stake both inside and outside the arena.
2. The Structure of Panem
The nation of Panem emerged from the ruins of North America, which was largely destroyed by various wars and natural disasters. It is divided into the ruling “Capitol”, as well as 13 surrounding “districts”.
Each of these districts has a specific purpose. District 12, for example, is used for coal extraction, District 7 for lumber production, and District 1 for luxury goods. The smaller the number, the closer the district is to the Capitol, and the higher the prosperity there.
In a rebellion, the districts tried to overthrow the Capitol but failed. Subsequently, District 13 was destroyed, leading to the so-called “Hunger Games”. As a warning never to rebel against the Capitol again, every year a girl and a boy aged between 12 and 18 are drawn from each of the districts to compete in an arena for their lives.
3. What was “The Hunger Games” about?
Spoiler alert: This summarizes the events of the original “The Hunger Games” series.
In the original “The Hunger Games” series, the story revolves around Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12. She managed to survive the Hunger Games not once, but twice. In the process, she became the face of a new rebellion and the opponent of President Snow. In the end, the impossible happened – the fall of the Capitol and the introduction of democratic elections.
4. When does the film take place in relation to its predecessors?
The prequel takes place 64 years before the “The Hunger Games” series. At this time, Panem is just shortly after the “Dark Days”, i.e., the first rebellion. The Hunger Games are still quite new, which is why they are conducted far less pompously than during Katniss’s time.
While none of the young characters play a role in the prequel, we see the backstory of President Coriolanus Snow. Since he was, in a way, the villain of the original books and films, this opens up a whole new perspective.
5. Where does the name “Lucy Gray” come from?
One detail that gets more attention in the book adaptation than in the film is the origin of Lucy Gray’s name. It comes from a poem by William Wordsworth from 1799 titled “Lucy Gray”. It tells the story of the fate of a little girl who perished in a snowstorm.
In the film, Lucy sings a small part of it. However, more is not explained. If you want to understand all the connections here, you should read the poem before going to the cinema.
7. Will there be more installments?
It is still unknown whether there will be more installments of “The Hunger Games”. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, producer Nina Jacobson explained that she is generally interested in more films, but only under the guidance of author Suzanne Collins.
However, since “The Hunger Games X – The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” is currently a standalone book, we will likely have to wait for more works from Collins.
