Dick Van Dyke’s character, Dr. Townshend, is the complete opposite of Dr. Kelso. He is friendly to everyone, always has a smile on his face, and J.D. is looking forward to having to work with him. But J.D. discovers that Townshend does not really rely on modern treatment methods.
For a long time, Dr. Kelso was a character in Scrubs who had little depth. He was the big bad boss who terrorized the residents. However, throughout the series, he showed that there is more to his character.
One of the best episodes with Kelso is probably the one with Townshend. He explains to him that it is important to stay fit in the medical profession. Experience has its advantages, but you fall behind if you do not keep up with the times. This represents Kelso, and Dick Van Dyke as a guest matches well, as he has worked long in his industry.
