The OpenAI bots are considered a significant step for artificial intelligence even by Bill Gates. They managed to defeat DOTA 2 players in a team.
A few days ago, we reported that a team consisting of artificial intelligences had managed to outsmart players of DOTA 2. Now Bill Gates has also spoken out. He views this achievement of AI as “a major milestone in the development of artificial intelligences”.
What did Bill Gates say? According to Gates, the success of the bots in Dota 2 is “a big deal, because their victory required teamwork and collaboration – a major milestone in efforts to advance artificial intelligences.” Most AIs so far operate alone and do not rely on other “partners” – integrating this is a big step.
Later, Gates added that “this is just one of many fascinating projects he has seen from OpenAI. They are working to ensure that as many people as possible can benefit from artificial intelligence.”
In the eyes of many players, the bots for Dota 2 were not a special spectacle. Although they successfully stood up against their opponents in some rounds, those were amateurs. Additionally, the played matches were subject to numerous restrictions. For example, the heroes to be played were strictly specified (they had to be mirror matches) and certain items, such as wards, were not allowed to be used. For some players, that was “no longer DOTA 2”.
In the past, the AI managed to defeat professionals in Dota 2, but only in 1vs1 at that time – the experts looked quite old-fashioned then.
How do you see the development of AIs that learn independently, communicate with each other, and coordinate? A fascinating development that will benefit us all? Or just the first step into a dark future we know from sci-fi movies?
