ESO: The best stamina DD builds for beginners

ESO: The best stamina DD builds for beginners

The MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) now offers you a choice of up to 6 classes that you must choose from. In this guide, we want to show you some stamina builds that will help you master the beginnings in ESO.

What is this about? This is part 2 of a series of guides in which we want to introduce you to builds that will help beginners start well in ESO. This article is all about stamina builds. As a stamina player, you focus on physical damage, take on the role of a DD (Damage Dealer), and can manage well in the open world and in dungeons.

In this guide, we want to explain how the various builds work. Not only the choice of classes plays an important role, but also the choice of races. In this guide, you will learn which race is best suited for each role.

In the other guides, we also cover the following topics:

Before we dive into the guide, we would like to briefly introduce important vocabulary that is frequently used in the guide and also in the game.

Who is speaking here?: MiezeMelli has been playing The Elder Scrolls Online since the beta. Since early 2018, she has been regularly streaming ESO on Twitch and has been part of Bethesda’s official ESO Stream Team since late 2020. Since January 2018, she has been creating videos (raid triples, guides, DPS tests) on YouTube. She has over 6900 play hours on 18 max level characters and 1840 champion points (as of 25.06.2021). On MeinMMO, she has been responsible for everything related to ESO, especially guides, since May 2021.

Important vocabulary you should know for this guide

  • What is a DoT? This refers to a skill that deals damage over time (Damage over Time = DoT). The opponent cannot dodge this by changing position as with area attacks.
  • What is an Execute? This refers to skills that deal significantly more damage when the target has low health.
  • What is a Spammable? This refers to a skill that does not deal damage over time and can be cast frequently in succession, hence “spamming”. It primarily deals an initial damage and is used whenever area attacks or DoTs are not needed.
  • What does the word Morph mean? This refers to a different version of a skill. In ESO, you have the option to change a skill (morph) as soon as it reaches level IV. You will then always have 2 selectable options that differ slightly.
  • What does pre-buffing mean? This refers to preparing for a fight. Before it begins, you activate abilities that grant you buffs (advantages) from the start.

Skills for the Stamina Damage Dealer (DD)

As a stamina character, you can adjust your weapon choice slightly according to the situation. For example, the two-handed sword has a skill that simultaneously gives you a shield and deals area damage. This skill is suitable for situations with many enemies. With the bow, you can reach targets that are further away. Daggers are well-suited for close combat and particularly strong, as they increase your chance to land critical hits.

Update: There is no longer a strict separation between stamina & magicka DDs, as all skills now scale with the highest resource value. You can use both stamina and magicka abilities to deal high damage.

In principle, almost all passive abilities of classes and weapons apply: you will need them all. Here are some suggestions on how you could play the respective classes at the beginning.

Stamina Nightblade

The Stamsblade (English short form for Stamina Nightblade) is known for a fast playstyle.
For starters, I recommend the following skills:

ESO Stamina NB

On the 1st bar (Frontbar):

  • 1: Death’s Cloak (Two Weapons): Every second, you deal 236 damage to enemies within 5 meters. You receive the buff: Greater Evasion, you take 11% less damage from area attacks for 10 seconds.
  • 2: Murderous Blade (Assassination): You deal 841 disease damage. Against targets with less than 25% health, you deal 300% additional damage. This is your execute, which replaces the spammable at 25% health.
  • 3: Spiked Trap (Fighter’s Guild): You place a trap that triggers after 1.5 seconds and lasts for 1 minute. If triggered, it incapacitates the enemy for 2 seconds (except bosses) and deals 2016 damage for 18 seconds and 841 initial damage. Additionally, you receive the buff: Lesser Force, increasing your critical damage by 10% for the duration.
  • 4: Surprise Attack (Shadow): You deal 1684 damage to the enemy. If you flank them (hit from the side or from behind), you reduce their physical resistance by 5% for 8 seconds. Attacking from the side stuns the target for 3 seconds and puts them off balance.
  • 5: Unrelenting Focus (Assassination): For 1 minute, your critical damage and healing increase with each light or heavy attack up to 5 times by 2% each. After 5 light or heavy attacks (as long as active), you can fire a spectral arrow (Assassin’s Scourge) for half the cost. This deals 3132 disease damage and heals you for 33% of the damage dealt when you are at melee range.
  • R: Unchecked Assault (Assassination): You deal 2695 disease damage, and your damage against the struck enemy is increased by 11% for 6 seconds. If you use at least 120 ultimate power, the enemy is stunned for 3 seconds. While equipped, you regain 100 Magicka and Stamina whenever you make a light or heavy attack and the enemy has a negative effect on them.

On the 2nd bar (Backbar):

  • 1: Draining Attacks (Siphoning): Your light and heavy attacks heal you for 1452 health for 20 seconds and restore 106 stamina. Fully charged heavy attacks restore double. After the effect ends, you regain 4270 stamina. The longer it’s active, the more you restore.
  • 2: Resolving Vigor (Assault): You heal for 3620 over 4 seconds.
  • 3: Whirling Path (Shadow): An area attack in front of you that deals magic damage in that area every second. Additionally, you receive the buff: Greater Swiftness, which increases your movement speed by 30% in the area.
  • 4: Endless Hail (Bow): Bow salvo, which deals 280 damage every second in the chosen area for 12 seconds after 2 seconds.
  • 5: Sharpened Talons: You deal 168 damage every second in the target area for 10 seconds and reduce enemy movement speed by 50%. Additionally, you apply the debuff: Greater Breach, decreasing physical and spell resistance by 5948 for 4 seconds to enemies taking damage.

The Unrelenting Focus is only unlockable at level 42 in Assassination, but it is one of the most important skills of the Nightblade. As long as you cannot unlock it yet, you could use the Shadow Cloak from the Shadow instead.

Stamina Sorcerer

The Stamsorc (English short form for Stamina Sorcerer) can deal quite good area damage for a stamina class. With the combination of Whirl and Surge, it also has very good self-heal. A run through the Maelstrom Arena is noticeably easier with this class than with another stamina class.

Stamina Warden

The Stamden (English short form for Stamina Warden) has a striking number of skills that provide buffs or debuffs. This is quite practical in solo content. In group content, tanks and healers usually handle this.

For starters, I recommend the following skills:

ESO Stamina Warden

For starters, I recommend the following skills:

Equipment for a Stamina DD:

You do not need to start collecting equipment before level 50 and Champion Point level 160. If you find set items, add them to your collection by binding, selling them (once they disappear from the buyback), deconstructing, or researching.

Good sets for starters can generally be made by other players. The community is usually very friendly, and if you ask a player nicely, they will surely help you craft armor. The following craftable sets are suitable for stamina DDs:

  • Hunding’s Wrath (Bankorai, Rivenspire, Rift)
  • Acolyte of the New Moon (Southern Elsweyr)
  • Mother of Night’s Gaze (Bankorai, Rivenspire, Rift)
  • Mechanic’s Gaze (Clockwork City)

For traits, you can choose “Learning,” as this increases your experience gain when killing enemies by a percentage (the value depends on the quality of your armor: Gold – 9% per piece of armor). For jewelry, choose robust, bloodthirsty, or infused traits.

Once you reach level 50 with your character, you unlock a new level system: the Champion Points. You can use these across all characters, even if another character has not yet reached level 50. In this article, you can learn more about the Champion Points system.
