The Elder Scrolls Online is a great MMORPG for solo players, but there is also plenty of stuff for groups. You can find out what you can optimally do in teams in ESO here.
As a large MMORPG, ESO places great emphasis on group activities. If you want to have fun with other players, you will always find plenty to do in The Elder Scrolls Online. Thanks to the “One Tamriel” concept, you can participate in almost all group activities regardless of your level. However, you should only tackle challenges in veteran mode at max level.
But what can you do in ESO together with friends and fellow players? At a glance, these are:
- Open dungeons in the game world
- Dungeon instances
- Trials, the raids of ESO
- Group arenas where you fight waves of enemies
- The challenges of the open world, such as world bosses or events
- Battlefields for small PvP battles
- The war for Cyrodiil and the Imperial City as a large PvP in the open world
Open Dungeons (PvE)
What is this? Public dungeons are areas on the map accessible to everyone. They are not separate instances, so anyone can run in and smash the enemies. However, they respawn quickly. Public dungeons are usually found in caves in the game world. There is always a quest associated with them and a special reward to collect.
How many players should participate? The simple public dungeons can easily be tackled alone. However, for the larger public group dungeons, you should at least have one or two friends with you. However, there are often random players running around in the dungeons whom you can invite to your group.
Where can you find this activity? There are small public dungeons in every map. They are marked on the map with a torch. The group dungeons have a small plus sign next to the torch. An example of such public group dungeons is Labyrinthian in the “Western Skyrim” region.
Group Dungeons (PvE)
What is this? Group dungeons are instances specifically designed for four players. Here, you only encounter the players in your group, and a sensible group composition is important. Because here you will face dangerous bosses that require specific tactics to defeat.
Dungeons are available in both normal and veteran mode. The latter offers particularly nasty challenges, but the loot is much better. However, the rewards are worth it in any case.
How many players should participate? Ideally, you should have a group of four with one tank, two DPS players, and one healer. The tank distracts the boss and absorbs the damage. This allows the DPS classes to unleash their damage and take down the boss undisturbed. Meanwhile, the healer tries to keep the group alive. Interestingly, hardcore players do dungeons solo.
Where can you find this activity? Many dungeons can be found in the game world, where they are represented by an archway. However, you can also choose the dungeons directly through the group finder and register there for the roles you want to play. So, DPS, tank, or healer. Please be so kind and register only as a tank or healer if you really want to play that role. Because nothing is more annoying than fake tanks in ESO.
Trials (PvE)
What is this? Trials are in ESO what raids are in other MMORPGs. So massive super-dungeons with even more bosses. Moreover, the boss battles here are particularly complex, and you should expect many failures before you finally achieve victory. There is also a veteran mode for particularly daring players for even more loot.
How many players should participate? Trials are designed for 12 players. So you have three complete groups here. How the ratio of tanks to DPS and healers is assigned is up to your group.

Where can you find this activity? You can also find the trials in the game world. They are marked on the map with an archway, like the dungeons. Trials are additionally marked with a monster skull above the entrance.
Group Arenas (PvE)
What is this? In these arenas, your group usually moves from one arena to the next, facing increasingly difficult waves of monsters and bosses. In the arenas, you receive a unique set of rewards, and there are leaderboards where the best players can immortalize themselves.
The arenas are roughly as challenging to master as dungeons. Additionally, there is a veteran mode for more loot.
How many players should participate? Group arenas, like dungeons, are designed for 4 players. Again, you should set up your group according to the holy trinity of MMORPGs with tank, DPS, and healer.
Where can you find this activity? ESO currently offers two group arenas: the Dragonstar Arena in the base game of ESO and the Blackrose Prison. The latter is part of the Murkmire DLC. You can find them on the map in the respective areas. The Dragonstar Arena is in Upper Craglorn, the Blackrose Prison is in the Murkmire area. The map icon is the same as for dungeons.
Zone Challenges (PvE)
What is this? In every zone of ESO, there are challenges that you can theoretically complete alone but ideally with friends. These are world bosses and world events:
- World bosses: These are dangerous boss opponents that stand alone on the map. They are particularly threatening and drop special items when you defeat them.
- World events: These are large-scale events that occur in the open world. In the base game, these are the dark anchors that fall from the sky and summon monsters. In Summerset, you encounter geysers that do similar things. In Greymoor, eerie storm clouds emerge that spawn monsters. A special feature here is Elsweyr, where real dragons occasionally appear.
How many players should participate? The zone challenges can be addressed by as many players as want to participate. Often, dozens of players gather when a storm cloud or dragon approaches.
Where can you find this activity? World bosses are marked on the map with a skull and crossed swords. Anchors, geysers, and storm clouds are recognized by a stylized whirlpool. Dragons, on the other hand, are recognizable by small dragon icons. However, keep in mind that the bosses and events are not always available. If they have been defeated by players, it takes some time for them to respawn.
Battlefields (PvP)
What is this? If you like to fight against other players, you can find your way into one of the battlefields. These are instanced PvP arenas for three teams, where you have to do something different depending on the game mode:
- Deathmatch: Here you need to kill as many enemies as possible within a certain time. Each kill gives points; whoever has the most at the end wins.
- Domination: Here you capture and hold points. For this, you get victory points, and whoever captures a certain number wins.
- Crazy King: The game principle is similar to Domination, but the capture points are constantly changing.
- Chaos Ball: In the Chaos Ball mode, introduced with Horns of the Reach, you must capture and hold a ball. However, it constantly deals damage to you, so you cannot hold it indefinitely.
- Relic Hunt: Here, the goal is to capture the relics of the other teams and bring them to your own base. At the same time, you must not lose your own relics.
Like other group activities, battlefields also have their own achievements, leaderboards, and rewards, including alliance points and unique styles.
How many players should participate? Four-player groups participate in the battlefields. In each battlefield, there are three teams in the field.
Where can you find this activity? You choose battlefields through the group finder.
Alliance War & Imperial City (PvP)
What is this? In the context of the Alliance War, members of the three alliances plunge into battle for the Ruby Throne in the region of Cyrodiil. You take over villages and castles with your comrades and secure Scrolls of the Ancients for special bonuses. The strongest player of the victorious alliance can even crown themselves Emperor for a time. Detailed information about Imperial City PvP can be found here.
In Cyrodiil, there is also the Imperial City in the center, where you meet hostile players as well as particularly strong monsters.
How many players should participate? The battles for Cyrodiil are fought by as many players as have signed up for a campaign. Normally, three alliances with dozens of players on each side compete.
Where can you find this activity? You can enter the war for Cyrodiil by accessing the alliance war menu in the user interface. There you simply select a campaign and queue up.
