The developers of the upcoming MMO shooter Escape from Tarkov have released an initial Developer Diary discussing the online game.
Interestingly, Escape from Tarkov is not the first game in this universe. The online game is based on the shooter Russia 2028, which is currently on hold, and the online shooter Contract Wars. All games are essentially set in the same fictional future Russia. Everything the developers learned from the two projects is now used to make Escape from Tarkov something special.
As realistic as possible
A Russian military expert, who prefers to remain anonymous, assists the team in achieving the highest possible realism in the game. To this end, they train with real weapons. These weapons are implemented into the game 1:1, as are their actual sound effects. Particular attention is paid to the animations. Using motion capture, the movements are recorded under the direction of the military expert. These are then transferred into the game, resulting in astonishingly realistic outcomes, as seen in the linked video below.
Especially when it comes to handling weapons, such as how to change magazines or fix jammed firearms, the implementation is intended to be as realistic as possible. The countless animations captured through motion capture are integrated into the game using a special technology, allowing for smooth transitions between the different animation stages. There should be no delays or missed movements. Everything is intended to feel as fluid as possible. The level of realism the developers want is extremely high.
Attention to Details
Everything the player does should be represented through animation. When opening a door, one can see how the hand pushes down the handle. When picking up a can, the character truly reaches for it. A light switch is actually pressed. The developers even pay attention to small details, such as ensuring that the position of the hand relative to the object being interacted with is correct or that objects have weight, and the hands holding a weapon must account for this weight, which is reflected in the animations.
