The hardcore shooter Escape from Tarkov now rewards snitching. Those who find a cheater in the game and report them to the developers will receive a bounty if the rogue is actually banned. Players are discussing the amount of the reward.
This is the new rule: With patch 0.14.9.5. on July 4, 2024, Escape from Tarkov introduced a new feature:
- Players receive in-game currency as a reward for reporting a player if the report leads to banning the naughty rogue: Officially referred to as “someone who violates the rules,” it mainly concerns cheaters.
- The in-game cash reward comes with a message that the offender has been blocked.
- Those who submit multiple successful reports will also be rewarded multiple times.
Is the reward too low or just right?
This is how it is discussed: In a reddit thread from July 6, players discuss the new system.
- Low to high five-digit sums in rubles are likely to be paid out.
- One says he received 78,000 rubles for a report – another mentions having received 20,900 rubles.
Players say it is not quite clear how the amount of the reward is determined, but generally, there is consensus that it is relatively small money and does not cover the costs incurred by being taken out by a cheater.
But they don’t seem to find that too bad at all. One player explains: It is just right, if one received much more rubles, say 500,000 per report, then one would simply report everyone for the slim chance of hitting it right and making a fat profit.
Overall, the system is well received by the players. Measures against cheaters and similar systems like the one currently active have been requested by players for 5 years.
Players now admonish each other to use the system responsibly, ensuring that they report actual cheaters and not just significantly better players.
Escape from Tarkov is considered an “authentic, thrilling” alternative to Western shooters like Call of Duty. However, with a debate that has taken place over the past few months, a lot of goodwill that had been shown to the developers over the years has been squandered: Escape from Tarkov players are outraged because the developers hide the new PvE mode behind €250.
