In a stream, the first live gameplay from the PS5 was shown. The CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, is also excited about something else regarding the PlayStation 5 that will revolutionize the PC market as well. The secret behind it is a close collaboration between him and Sony: the storage architecture surrounding the SSD
In a stream on the occasion of the Summer Game Fest 2020, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney spoke in a conversation with Geoff Keighley about the new Unreal Engine 5. He also talked about the PlayStation 5, from which the first gameplay scenes were visible.
We have embedded the stream of the Summer Game Fest 2020 video for you here once again:
Sweeney: “The storage architecture of the PS5 is far ahead of everything else”
What does Sweeney say about the PS5? During the presentation of Unreal Engine 5, the Epic CEO stated:
We have been working very closely with Sony in the area of data storage for quite some time. The storage architecture of the PS5 is far ahead of what you can currently buy for any amount of money for a PC. It will help drive future PCs. The PC market will see this thing and say, “Oh wow, SSDs will have to keep up with this development.”

Furthermore, developers will have entirely new possibilities regarding how the system can access data. This allows more game data to be loaded at once.
“The world of loading times is over”
And the special storage architecture of the PS5 surrounding the “Custom SSD” solution is also supposed to mean extremely short or non-existent loading times. Sweeney elaborates:
Not only the best in the console space but also the best on any platform – better than a high-end PC. This will enable types of immersion we have only dreamed of in the past. The world of loading screens is over. The days of pop-in and geometry that appears while traversing these game environments are over. (…)

And although the PS5’s SSD might not be a top model, it is expected to be faster than most SSDs that current PC gamers install in their computers.

The technology of the PS5 is also important for the PC market
That’s why the PS5 is important for the PC: Even for people who do not want to buy a PlayStation or Xbox Series X, this development is likely to be important. This is primarily because consoles are very important for technological experiments.
Technology is tested on the console, which might later also be available on the PC. Sweeney has also explained that once you recognize the potential of the PlayStation 5’s SSD, the PC market is likely to implement the technology soon. This way, PC gamers will also benefit from the developments of the next-gen.
Thanks to the developer stream with Mark Cerny, we now know important information about the performance of the PS5. Here, Cerny also mentioned, alongside information about backward compatibility and ray tracing, a few things about the update policy and loading times of the PS5.
