In the DLC of Elden Ring, there are numerous new weapons, including a category that currently excites fans of Monster Hunter. Players see a clear reference to their favorite monster game.
What new types of weapons are there? The DLC Shadow of the Erdtree features a massive game world, over 40 new bosses, and new NPCs, along with a whole cargo load of new weapons.
There are eight new weapon categories. These include Light Greatswords, Beast Claws, Throwing Weapons, and Stabbing Shields. But it is another new type of weapon that is currently causing excitement. Great Katanas have caught the attention of Monster Hunter fans.
Because both the attack patterns and animations remind them of their favorite game – and that is likely no coincidence.
A Successful Reference
What have fans discovered? The Great Katanas from the Elden Ring DLC bear a striking resemblance to the Longswords from Monster Hunter – which are popular. One might assume that Katana-like weapons could easily resemble each other. However, when one looks at a comparison, it becomes clear that the animations are nearly identical.
The X user @AsagiKurosagi posted a comparison and wrote: “Miyazaki, you madman, I know why you call them Great Katanas, I see your trick.”
Even in the ongoing game, true Monster Hunter fans notice the similarity. The X user @Twas_By_Design found the Dragon Hunter Great Katana and immediately tried it out. Within seconds, he recognized where he knew the attack patterns from. In Monster Hunter, it corresponds to the PS button combination Triangle-Circle-Triangle.
The Dragon Hunter Great Katana shown in the X user’s clip is obtained as a reward for completing the “Dragon Pit” dungeon in the Gravefield level.
This seems to be a successful reference and homage to the games from Capcom. And who knows if clever fans might find even more of this in the Elden Ring DLC.
