Elden Ring is a challenging game. As an action RPG, you have many ways to improve your character significantly. For that, you need runes in this game. How to farm them best, and whether it’s even necessary, we’ll tell you here.
Souls-like games such as Elden Ring are different from typical action RPGs despite many overlaps.
- There are 10 classes, but they do not work as you think.
- Loot & leveling also have more peculiarities than other RPGs.
One of the most important differences is the rune system, which replaces souls from Dark Souls or blood echoes from Bloodborne in Elden Ring.

What are runes in Elden Ring? Runes are one of the most important things in Elden Ring. They are both XP and money.
You can use runes for leveling, to buy items, or to pay for your weapon upgrades. You obtain runes by defeating enemies or using items like the Golden Rune.
If you die, you lose the runes at your place of death. If you don’t collect them before dying again, they are gone forever.
Many players want to know how to farm them best. MeinMMO tells you about a fantastic method that you can use in the early game. We’ll also tell you whether it’s worth it at all.
Is it worth farming runes in Elden Ring?
How important is farming? For Elden Ring as well as for other Soulsborne titles, farming is only limitedly useful.
Instead of farming runes for an hour to slightly increase your damage or health points, you could spend that hour trying the difficult boss instead.
Because even at a high level, you still need to be able to dodge the bosses. For most players, it makes more sense to get used to the game mechanics in the boss fight itself and improve through that experience than to spend the same playing time on tedious farming.
This practical gaming experience helps you significantly more against every other tough opponent in the game than any extra level.
When is rune farming worthwhile? Therefore, there are primarily 2 reasons why you should still farm in Elden Ring:
- You want to equip a weapon for which you lack attributes.
- You want to buy something for which you lack the money.
If you have found a weapon that you absolutely want to use but lack the correct attributes, farming can pay off. Just keep in mind that you still need to upgrade this weapon to get the most out of it.
Using the method described on page 2, you can use the gear you discovered faster and more purposefully. Depending on what equipment or item it is, this can also make the difficult boss fight significantly easier. Under these circumstances, farming can be worthwhile.
You can find the guide for an excellent early-game method with spoilers on page 2.
