A new feature of Elden Ring is the summoning of spirits. These can assist you at certain difficult points in the game. How to summon and improve them is revealed by MeinMMO in our guide.
What are these spirits? You can find so-called spirit ashes in Elden Ring. With the corresponding item, you can use this ash to summon spirits.
- These are NPCs that take the form of various enemies from the game world but fight on your side.
- You can use them against Margit, the 1st boss, which we also recommend in our guide.
- The probably most powerful spirit is the Mimic Tear, which takes your form and makes boss fights significantly easier.
The key to everything is the Spirit Calling Bell. You receive it early in the game from an NPC who can be easily overlooked.

Finding the Spirit Calling Bell and Summoning Spirits – Here’s How
You receive the Spirit Calling Bell from the witch Renna.
Where can Renna be found? You can initially find her in the Church of Elleh, which you discover right after the tutorial. There is also a merchant and a blacksmith’s anvil to perform the first upgrades.
- However, Renna only appears there after you have activated the grace site at the ruins before the gate. If you do that, you will also receive Torrent, your spirit horse.
- Now you just have to fast travel back to the grace site at the church and find Renna on a wall, to the left below the church tower.
- Talk to her and confirm that you are the Accursed.
If you missed her, there is a second way:
If you take too long to get your mount, you will not find her there anymore.
But that’s no problem. As soon as you find yourself at the table of grace, you can buy the bell from an NPC for 100 runes.
Here’s how to summon spirits: Throughout the game, you can find many of these spirit ashes and gain many useful helpers in your collection.
Then you need to have enough FP, or mana, to perform the summoning. To increase your FP, you can level up the “Spirit” attribute or use certain talismans.
- You cannot summon the spirits everywhere.
- This is only possible in certain areas, where you encounter particularly many or tough enemies.
- Furthermore, summoning is possible during most boss fights.
Where can you summon spirits? You can recognize it by a gravestone symbol that is shown at the bottom left of the screen, above your quick items, when you enter such an area.
In combat, however, you must be careful, as the summoning has an animation and can be interrupted by enemy attacks.
Also, be careful not to accidentally step out of the area during a fight. Otherwise, the spirit will disappear and you’ll be left alone.
So be sure to stay close to the original summoning point.
Where can I find ash? Some can be found in the many optional dungeons, and some are dropped by certain particularly tough enemies.

You will automatically encounter them during the game if you keep your eyes open. There are spirits that support you with buffs, can fight from a distance, and can even fly or be summoned in large groups.
But remember: You can only activate one summoning at a time. Also, be aware that you can only use the strongest spirits if you have enough FP. So you will need to increase your spirit attribute.
Improve Spirits and Complete Roderika’s Quest
To do this, you need to find Roderika and complete her quest. You will first meet her at the grace site “Stormveil Shack”. Talk to her there.
She will ask you to take a message to the Chrysalids in Stormveil Castle. However, you first need to get there and get past Margit, the 1st boss.
While exploring the castle, keep an eye out for a large dining hall. There you will find the item Chrysalids’ Memento, which you must bring back to Roderika.
Now you will meet Roderika at the table of grace and need to talk to her. You will have to repeat this a few times until she asks if she should ask the blacksmith for work.
Confirm, and she will later offer the option to improve spirits with spirit tallow at the blacksmith.
The spirits are especially useful for players who have trouble with the difficulty level of Elden Ring, but cannot call on other players for help. Especially for solo players, they can make your life easier.
