Elden Ring presents you with numerous challenges and threats. However, what players did not expect is the confusing fall damage. An item tells you when a fall or jump is deadly.
What is the problem with fall damage? Actually, fall damage is a common mechanic in open-world games. However, it occasionally happens that games make their damage from high falls difficult to estimate.
- Normally, the transitions from no, low, and even deadly fall damage are relatively clear, and one can estimate which jump is risky and which is not.
- However, looking at player reactions since release, it seems that Elden Ring does not handle this very well.
- In the Subreddit for the game, you will find numerous posts criticizing fall damage or making fun of it.
But when is a jump deadly? A player has figured out how to determine that at least on foot.
Rainbow stones can save you from deadly fall damage
Here’s how it works: The player phatrequiem demonstrates in a clip how he lays out glitter stones to test fall damage in a dungeon.
- Position yourself at the edge from which you want to jump down. Go into your inventory and select the glitter stone in the consumables.
- Check if it breaks upon impact or continues to shine. If the stone is still intact, you can jump safely.
Unfortunately, it cannot be said exactly whether the stone breaks at the slightest fall damage or only with deadly falls.
Either way, it is very useful and can be crucial in dungeons where healing potions eventually become scarce.
The item’s capability is even mentioned in the menu, but the description is easy to overlook. Generally, Elden Ring is full of such items, whose properties are often not immediately apparent. For example, there is a torch that keeps the most annoying enemies at bay.
Here is the description of the rainbow stones:
Does this work with Torrent as well? From your horse, it is harder to estimate the exact fall damage.
- You can survive deeper falls unscathed with Torrent, but the limit is even trickier here.
- The double jump also helps only to a limited extent, so do not rely on it. There’s no point in jumping from a great height and using the second jump just before impact. The fall damage will not be reduced.
- Before a fall is guaranteed deadly, only your horse will take fall damage. So you can “train” a bit and find out from which height it becomes dangerous with Torrent.
If you want to further reduce your damage, there’s also a very useful talisman:
You can also reduce your overall fall damage by increasing Dexterity. But how much impact does that have?
Dexterity reduces your fall damage
How much does this attribute affect? The YouTuber Skumnut tested how the Dexterity attribute affects your fall damage. He had a character perform a jump with 9 Dexterity to test the fall damage.
But be careful: These data are based on the network test from November. There’s a possibility that the values in the final game differ. You can try it yourself by resetting your stats and redistributing the attributes.
He continued this in increments of 10, up to the maximum value of 99. Here are the results:
| 9 Dexterity | 146 damage |
| 20 Dexterity | 133 damage |
| 30 Dexterity | 131 damage |
| 40 Dexterity | 128 damage |
| 50 Dexterity | 122 damage |
| 60 Dexterity | 123 damage |
| 70 Dexterity | 122 damage |
| 99 Dexterity | 113 damage |
At first glance, it does not seem that Dexterity has a really significant influence on fall damage if the data remains consistent in the final game. You take 35% less damage with maximum Dexterity.

As soon as there are more recent tests, we will update the results here. But what do you think about it? Have you also had problems with the difficult-to-estimate fall damage? Or have you not encountered any difficulties so far? How do you proceed to avoid this? Feel free to share your experiences with us.
