Since the announcement of Konami’s eFootball 2022, the monetization of content has been a topic. A taste of this might be a pre-order pack that includes a DLC that is not available at release.
What exactly is eFootball 2022? eFootball 2022 is developed by Konami and replaces the long-standing Pro Evolution Soccer series. With eFootball 2022 Konami distinguishes itself significantly from FIFA in two main aspects:
- eFootball 2022 will be a Free2Play game and therefore free.
- Thanks to crossplay, all platforms can play together.
The game is supposed to be supported for years and thus replace annual installments. The football simulation is now based on the Unreal Engine and aims to impress with completely new animations and new features.
However, this raises the question of funding – traditionally, F2P titles come with in-game shops where specific content can be purchased for real money. A new pre-order pack already shows where this journey could lead.
Pre-order pack includes DLC that won’t be available until 2 months after release
What is this pack and what’s inside? It’s called the Premium Player Pack and includes some pre-order bonuses. The price is set at 40 dollars, but in the European area, it should typically convert 1:1 to euros (via store.playstation.com).
The pack contains 2800 eFootball myClub Coins, which can be purchased for real money, similar to FIFA Points. 2800 Coins are worth around 28 euros. In addition, there are 6 so-called “Chance Deals”.
What are Chance Deals? According to the description, these deals allow you to sign one of 16 “Ambassador”- and partner-club players for your own club. However, there are a few catches: The Coins and Deals are only available with an update that will be released in mid-November.
eFootball 2022, however, is already set to release on September 30. Thus, you will have to wait almost 2 months before you can benefit from your pre-order bonuses.
Why is this unusual? It is nothing new for players to pay upfront for content that will be available after release. However, this content is usually clearly marketed as season or battle passes and not sold as a pre-order pack.
Pre-order content is usually available immediately at release. In principle, this pack is a pre-order of a pre-order. You pre-order the game, but you only receive the content as part of a DLC at a later time.
