Some German suppliers have received a new quota of PlayStation 5 consoles, shipped or sold. However, those buyers hoping for a decent profit through reselling on eBay are now greeted by an error message.
What is this rule? Anyone trying to sell a PS5 on eBay may receive an error message stating:
You want to list a PlayStation 5. This item has quantity restrictions on how many can be listed each week. You have reached this limit and cannot list this item at this time. However, you can list another PlayStation 5 7 days after your last PlayStation 5 listing. Non-verified sellers or those who do not meet our minimum seller standards may not list a PlayStation 5.

According to gameswirtschaft.de, this should apply to sellers who have previously traded few or no products on eBay, have been inactive for a long time, or have received few to no ratings.
The regulation has been in effect since November 2020. Currently, it is particularly important because many new consoles are being delivered or offered for sale. At the end of January, for instance, MediaMarkt and Saturn delivered pre-ordered PS5s.
Scalpers make a lot of money with the PS5
That’s why the rule is important: The trade in scarce goods like the PS5 was a major issue at the release of the new console in 2020. Buyers who purchase limited items like the PS5, Xbox Series X or new graphics cards to resell them at inflated prices are referred to as “scalpers”.
These scalpers have sold the PS5 for between 800 and 1,000 Euros – significantly more than its actual price of €499.99 for the disc version and €399.99 for the digital version. With the new rule, eBay is at least slightly restricting the trading of the PS5 on the platform.
Where can I buy a PS5? On February 2, some retailers like Amazon had new consoles in stock again. Otto also had PS5 consoles on offer again. However, the offers are already out of stock.
Those who purchased a console from the providers are expected to receive their package by February 14. The PS5 is still in high demand among gamers, but more supply will surely come.
