Everyone knows them, but hardly anyone knows what to do with them: silicone beads in their distinctive packets. They are usually included in various packages, only to end up in the trash shortly afterward. But did you know that they are versatile? We will show you how.
Why do these packets exist? These distinctive packets labeled “Silica Gel” or “Silica” are a type of drying agent. They consist of a porous form of silicon dioxide, which is primarily known for its moisture-absorbing properties.
That’s why they can mainly be found in packaging of electronic devices, shoeboxes, or also food and medicines, as they can bind moisture to avoid damage.
For many, these packets are just trash and end up in the bin accordingly. However, there are good reasons to collect these beads and use them elsewhere. We will show you in what form.
6 Reasons Not to Throw Away Silica Gel Beads
Since these beads can absorb moisture excellently and thus prevent damage, there are many applications in which they can still be used. We primarily mention the following possibilities for reusing them:
- Prevent Damage to Electronic Devices
- The infamous mishap when you’re in the bathroom: Your phone has fallen into the toilet. Not appetizing and, above all, annoying. But before using your precious rice for drying, you can pack your phone or any electronic component in a bag with these beads to dry them out.
- Preserve Seeds
- You received some seeds from your family or friends, but they aren’t packaged? Then you should place them in an airtight container and equip them with the silica gel packets. This way, excess moisture will be absorbed, and you prevent your seeds from falling victim to mold.
- Keep Jewelry from Tarnishing
- Are you tired of your silver or gold jewelry tarnishing, and you constantly have to scrub them with your toothpaste to bring back their shine? Then feel free to use one or two of these packets in your jewelry box to get rid of excess moisture.
- Visibility on Your Windshield
- Who doesn’t know it? You are sitting in the car with friends or colleagues, enjoying a meal from a fast-food chain, and suddenly the windows fog up. This is especially annoying when your own car takes too long to defog the windshield with the heater. If you want to prevent this, you can pack 4-6 packets under your windshield to avoid fogging.
- Protect Valuable Photo Collections
- One of the biggest enemies regarding old photos is moisture. If your memories are precious to you and you want to ensure that your photos don’t get damaged, you can pack a packet in your envelopes to better preserve them.
- Dry Flowers
- A creative way to use the beads is to fill a small bowl with them and then place flowers inside. The moisture from the flowers will be absorbed to preserve them. You can then use the dried flowers to make wreaths, bouquets, or similar crafts.
These were our 6 suggested possibilities for what you can still do with silica gel packets. If the packets have absorbed enough moisture, you can bake them in the oven at 75 degrees for 1-2 hours so they lose the absorbed moisture and can serve you again.
