In Destiny 2, after the Lightfall release, you will increasingly encounter players who do not know exactly how to trigger the heroic versions of public events. This often leads to frustration among fellow players. However, with our overview, this annoyance can be easily avoided.
With Lightfall, returning and new guardians have joined Destiny 2. As an experienced player, you will notice this repeatedly in activities that pair you with random teammates – including public events.
Newbies often cause frustration when triggering heroic events
Veterans annoyed: Do you as a veteran know the problem? You are currently playing with three randoms in the Throne World to participate in the new public event “Resonance Shard” and want to activate the heroic version of the public event. But apparently, you are the only one who really knows what to do. With a heavy heart, you will have to settle for the completion of the normal event and less loot shortly thereafter.
Newbies overwhelmed: Or have you just joined and are experiencing the whole thing from the opposite perspective? You want to participate in a public event and have (still) no idea why others are running from one corner to another and shooting at random spots or spaceships? Hardly having started, the event is almost over without your involvement, and you have no idea how or why?
The interesting thing is that even experienced guardians have admitted that they do not know the exact details of some events or have performed some mechanics incorrectly up until now. So it is not exclusively newbies or returners who sometimes fail to trigger a heroic event.
For veterans, returners, and newbies: To avoid these problems, we have summarized all public events in an overview for you and explain how you can start the respective heroic version.
How to start all public events in Destiny 2 heroically
Currently, there are a total of 14 public events in Destiny 2 that are distributed across various locations. The name of the event will be displayed on the left side of the screen at the start.
The Glimmer Extraction – Destroy 3 Glimmer Generators
- Location: ETZ on Earth, Cosmodrome, Nessus, Europa
- Heroic Mode: To trigger the heroic mode, you must destroy three Fallen generators that appear around the extraction area. You can recognize them by the fact that they take damage as soon as the devices are targeted. You must destroy the generators before you take out the marked Captains.

The Ether Extraction – Kill all small Servitors
- Location: ETZ on Earth, Nessus, Moon, Europa
- Heroic Mode: To trigger the heroic mode, you should immediately take out all the small elite servitors that spawn shortly and protect their big brother with a shield. Be quick, as the small servitors will disappear relatively fast.

The Fallen Runner – Deactivate 3 Forcefield Domes
- Location: ETZ on Earth, Moon
- Heroic Mode: Here you must deactivate the three energy domes that spawn in the operational area. If you destroy a leg of the runner, it collapses and drops three arc orbs that you must place in the holders of the three domes (two per dome, for a total of six). Once you have deactivated all force fields, the event will trigger heroically.

The Witches Ritual – Destroy the 2 Crystals
- Location: Moon, Throne World
- Heroic Mode: To defeat the witches, you must deactivate their shields. This happens when you stand on the obvious seal plates. After the two witches die, stay on the plates and destroy the crystals above the witch portal on the right and left. This will trigger the heroic version of the event.

Pillars Integration – Capture all 3 Plates
- Location: Nessus, Europa
- Heroic Mode: Three plates must be captured while the Vex sacrifice themselves at the Conflux. From the Conflux, three beams lead to the nearby platforms, making them impossible to miss. At the same time, be careful that not too many Vex sacrifice themselves in the middle (maximum 10), otherwise the event is lost.

The Possessed Blight – Destroy the Large Blight Sphere
- Location: ETZ on Earth, Dreaming City
- Heroic Mode: To trigger the heroic variant, you need to pick up a buff from a smaller blight sphere and then shoot at the large sphere. The buff lasts five seconds and allows you to deal damage to the large sphere.

The Cabal Excavations – Destroy the Cabal Crusher
- Location: ETZ on Earth, Neomuna
- Heroic Mode: For the heroic mode, you must shoot down a ship that will patrol over the event area after some time (40-45% progress).

The Cabal Rig – Destroy the Open Vents
- Location: ETZ on Earth, Nessus
- Heroic Mode: If you want to trigger the heroic variant, you have to shoot at the opening valves of the Cabal machine after each eliminated Elite Psion. These shimmer orange and take damage when you shoot at them. Note that these valves are only open for a short time. Additionally, you take damage when firing at the valves since you must be in a dome that is burning on the bottom.

The War Satellite – Take Out the 3 Howlers
- Location: Moon, Cosmodrome
- Heroic Mode: Kill the two witches with yellow health bars that spawn as the event progresses. Then take out the respective howler that opens after the witches’ death. Repeat this three times before you have secured the satellite 100%. Then the heroic version of the event will start.

The Ether Ritual – Kill the Mini-Boss, Destroy the Floating Ether
- Location: Dreaming City, Throne World
- Heroic Mode: Three Dredge Lieutenants spawn one after another. Each time you defeat a Dredge Lieutenant, “concentrated Ether” is released. This concentrated, floating Ether must be shot before it reaches the Servitor in the center. If you are able to fend off the concentrated Ethers of all three Dredge Lieutenants, the heroic event will start immediately.

The Rift Generator – Destroy the Blights
- Location: Dreaming City
- Heroic Mode: At the end of each wave, Blights will emerge at three possible locations around the generator. Eliminate these Blights quickly. Once you have defeated three Blights, a large Possessed Blight will spawn directly above the generator along with three Possessed Witches. Defeat the Witches before the generator is destroyed, and the heroic event will begin.

Krux Convergence – The Fight Against Giant Bombers
- Location: Europa
- Heroic Mode: Find the trio of scanning drones, as you must destroy them. They fly around the three Kruxes. These drones are hard to hit and have a short time window, so speed is key. Once you have shot down all the drones, the heroic event begins, and a mega robot known as “Fallen Commodore” lands, which you just have to defeat.
The Resonance Shard – Collect the Energy Orbs
- Location: Throne World
- Heroic Mode: While you escort the sled through the Throne World, some enemies drop small, orange orbs that you can collect. These are resonance charges. So grab the orbs whenever you can and throw them at the shard. Usually, 5-6 orbs are enough to switch the event into heroic mode. However, you need to look closely, as they are easy to overlook.

Assault Zone – “Vex Strike Team Incoming”
On Neomuna, Bungie designed the public event differently. While there are two Public Events on Neptune where the event symbol is displayed, these cannot be triggered heroically.
However, even if there is no heroic version, a special event on Neomuna is particularly rewarding, as it guarantees you an exotic gear piece for the first time. Even though many guardians long thought it was just a rumor.
It is only important that you play it to the end, as only then will you get the loot.
- Location: Neomuna
- Active Event Zone: To participate in the event, you need patience, as it is random and does not appear often. You need to keep checking the map in the area of the Vex Assault Zone.
- Now you need to defend yourself against hordes of Vex and six giant Vex Minotaur bosses within the time limit. If you play to the end, you will receive a loot chest that contains an exotic engram.
