Fortnite: Battle Royale is actually known for radically changing every season. But in Season 8, not much seems to be happening. Is the excitement gone, or is this actually a good thing? Our author Jürgen draws a conclusion.
What has happened so far in Season 8? I am not particularly enthusiastic about Season 8 in Fortnite. Neither the theme nor the Battle Pass appeals to me.
Otherwise, the new season in Fortnite doesn’t seem to bring much new. There have only been the following updates:
- Geysers as launch pads
- A Jungle Biome that replaced the Northeast
- A Treasure Map for more loot
- Cannons
- A kind of hamster ball called Kugler as a vehicle
Little Spectacular in Season 8
Admittedly, the cannons and the Kugler are fun and enjoyable, but overall not much is happening in Fortnite.
You will search in vain for new weapons and the map has only changed in a limited area.
Comparing this to Season 7, where the map became larger and a ton of new things like zip lines, airplanes, and new weapons were added, Season 8 seems rather unspectacular to me.
Also, the new weapons that might come soon: the Elf’s bow Ember or the Flintlock pistol from the pirate skin don’t impress me.
Why should I shoot with a pirate shotgun when I can have a hand cannon? And I really don’t need bows in a shooter.
Is Epic running out of ideas?
You can’t shake the feeling that Epic isn’t coming up with many new ideas lately, that they are playing it safe and not changing much.
Indeed, there are already plenty of different weapons in the game. There is simply a limit to the firearms that can be meaningfully differentiated.
How hard it is to find a useful niche for a new weapon has been demonstrated by the recently added infantry rifle. Few players find it really useful.
Perhaps Epic wants to focus first on fun vehicles and support items like Kugler and the Treasure Map before adding more weapons.
On the other hand, this reduces chaos and poor balancing in the game.
Players probably don’t want so much new stuff
What do the players say? On Reddit, however, Season 8 is going down well with players:
- Many love the zany pirate setting with cannons and the Kugler is already the great favorite of casual players.
- Only the Battle Pass and the lackluster Level 100 skin are often criticized.
It seems that many players appreciate that Fortnite takes a step back with new updates and keeps things a little calmer for now.
Season 7, on the other hand, accelerated new content and radically changed the game first with planes and then with swords and new game modes.
This was too much for many players.
That’s why it’s smart: By focusing on fun and not groundbreaking innovations, Epic seems to bind players and give them what they want.
Is there a plan behind this? Perhaps Epic is also saving the big new stuff to lure players back from Apex Legends once the initial hype around the upcoming Season 1 there has died down.
So it remains exciting.
