Exclusive content is always a topic in gaming. Some games are released only on specific consoles or for a certain period only there, until they are also released on other platforms. Are PS4 exclusive titles a reason for you to buy a PlayStation 4? Or vice versa for the Xbox?
What are exclusive games? Some video games are explicitly released for a console like the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One (or Nintendo Switch).
On PlayStation, there are games like
- Uncharted 4,
- God of War,
- Spider-Man
- or the new The Last of Us Part II as well as Death Stranding.
All major titles that every gamer has probably heard of somewhere. But officially, you can only play them on Sony’s consoles.
Many exclusive titles are also available on Xbox. The exclusivity refers to the fact that they do not appear on PS4. However, some can be played on PC. Games like
- Sea of Thieves,
- Forza Horizon 4
- State of Decay 2
- or Ori and the Blind Forest
You cannot officially play these on PS4. The popular battle royale shooter PUBG reached PS4 players nearly a year after its release on Xbox One. Would that be a reason to switch from a PS4 to an Xbox?
Exclusive content, a current topic
Is content enough? Some games are released for multiple platforms like PC, PS4, and Xbox One, but offer certain advantages on selected consoles.
At the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2, players on PS4 had early access to content like an outfit, horse, and a revolver for several days.
Such gimmicks occur more frequently, where players receive early access to content on one console that others have to wait for. In recent years, this was also the case with Destiny (2) with PS4-timed exclusive content.
What is happening currently? Recently, there were discussions about exclusive content again. In the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, a part of a game mode is exclusively reserved for PS4 players for about a year.
What do you think about exclusive content or games? Reasons for a purchase?
In the community, such content or games are controversial. I, Patrick, bought an Xbox One specifically to play Red Dead Redemption 2. And that, even though I hadn’t owned a console since the PlayStation 2. I simply could not wait for a PC release.
Do you feel the same? Would or did you buy a PS4 or Xbox One for certain games? Is it even just exclusive content that influenced your decision to purchase a specific console?
