Blizzard is entering the mobile games market with Diablo Immortal. And Diablo is not going to be the only franchise that we will be able to play on smartphones.
Blizzard has already stated that mobile will be an important pillar for the company’s future. It’s no surprise considering how gigantic this market is. Therefore, the studio has big plans in this direction that go beyond Diablo Immortal.
More mobile games are on the way
Blizzard wants to conquer the mobile games market: Was the announcement of Diablo Immortal surprising? No. It has been clear for years that Blizzard wants to develop mobile games. Blizzard is now dealing with the aftereffects.
Fans of Blizzard must prepare for the fact that Diablo Immortal will not be the only mobile game for one of the studio’s major franchises. The company is already pursuing further plans in this direction.
Mobile games have been in planning for a long time: Blizzard’s co-founder Allen Adham and Production Director Dan Elggren stated in an interview that there have been plans to enter the mobile games market for some time. It was just a matter of finding the right approach and developing a game that also makes sense on smartphones.
“How long have we been thinking about this? We not only have Diablo, but several franchises and discussed mobile and how to create the right experience on a mobile platform. We have been working on this for a while,” said Production Director Dan Elggren in the interview.
Moreover, Adham stated that plans are already being worked on for new mobile games. The upcoming games are intended to cover all the franchises that Blizzard currently has in its portfolio.
Blizzard keeps up with the times
Fans must come to terms with the future: No game company can avoid the mobile games market. The market research company Newzoo predicts that by the year 2020, half of all game revenues will be generated by mobile games.
- For 2018, the revenue from mobile games is expected to be around 57.9 billion dollars, with total game revenue across all platforms amounting to 125.4 billion dollars.
- In 2019, a global revenue of around 65.2 billion dollars is expected. A total revenue of 134.5 billion dollars is anticipated.
- In 2020, 72.3 billion dollars are expected. Total revenue is estimated at 143.5 billion dollars.
The best opportunities for expansion are currently offered by the mobile games market, which is why Blizzard will become more active here in the future.
