Sanctuary and the people living there have nothing to do with the Eternal Conflict, yet they have been drawn into it. And although Lilith is by no means a saint, her goal has always been to end this conflict.
But regardless of whether one or none of these theories ultimately turns out to be correct, I would find it cool if our player character from Diablo 3 is not simply swept under the rug.
After all, he is a Nephalem and they are known to have unlimited potential. Also for interesting plot twists.
But perhaps this temptation was not even necessary.
We have even seen the Nephalem
There are many speculations about who the man in the cinematic trailer for Diablo 4 could be. But what if he is neither Rathma, nor Mendeln, nor any other pretender to the role?
What if this man, who may be a necromancer, represents our Nephalem?
He could be our player character from Diablo 3, who was later turned into an independent character, as well as the warrior from Diablo 1. This character was the Dark Wanderer in Diablo 2, and Blizzard later revealed him to be Aidan, the son of King Leoric.
In that case, it would be the Nephalem who brings Lilith back from her banishment.

The Nephalem from D3 encountered information about Lilith, her history, and her plans during Reaper of Souls at the Pandemonium Fortress. The following things also speak in favor of this:
- He would definitely see Lilith as “mother.”
- He would theoretically be powerful enough to free her.
- He has seen that both demons and angels bring nothing good for Sanctuary.
Lilith rebelled against her own father and wrote in her writings that she wants to “win the war.” Not for the demons, but for herself and her children. Lilith as a third party would thus be a very attractive option for him.

What happens in Diablo 4 with our character from Diablo 3? Here are 3 theories about where he might have ended up.
This is the starting point: Diablo 4 takes place several decades after the end of D3: Reaper of Souls. The former Archangel of Wisdom, Malthael, became the incarnation of death and attempted to annihilate humanity.
His cheerful genocide adventure was stopped, but it left chaos and destruction in Sanctuary. The world lies in ruins, monsters and demons ravage the land, and humanity suffers.

But why? Where has the great protector of Sanctuary gone? Our player character from Diablo 3, the Nephalem, who was able to stand against both demons and angels?
This is why our Nephalem was important: The question of the Nephalem’s whereabouts is particularly in my mind after the ominous ending of Reaper of Souls. After defeating Malthael, our player character is presented as an overwhelmingly powerful figure.
He is someone who defeated the Prime Evil and death itself. He could easily act as the protector of Sanctuary. However, in the gameplay trailer for Diablo 4, the old narrator says: “There is no one left who could stand against them [the demons?].”
What could have happened to one of the strongest beings in the Diablo universe? Let’s speculate a bit.
The gravestone in the gameplay trailer
In the gameplay trailer, we get extensive information from a nameless narrator about what is happening in Sanctuary.
Blizzard has already confirmed that this man is an old Horadrim, and the community suspects that it could be Lorath Nahr. Lorath was still young when the events of Reaper of Souls took place and would fit the role.

More importantly, he is sitting in front of a gravestone and talking to a deceased friend. This gravestone is the reason for my first theory: Our Nephalem is dead.
Lorath develops a friendly relationship with our player character over the course of Reaper of Souls. The address “my friend” would be quite fitting here.

The reasons for the possible death of the Nephalem can be very diverse, for example:
- It may be related to the Realms of Fate. Perhaps our player character sacrificed himself at the end to seal them? They did pose a danger to Sanctuary.
- Perhaps Lilith had her fingers in the pie? She eliminated the Nephalem because he stood in her way.
- Another “offscreen” event has occurred that we do not yet know about and that is related to the story of Diablo 4.
It would be very anticlimactic to kill off such a powerful personality as our player character offscreen, but it is definitely within the realm of possibility. And it’s a simple solution to get rid of a character that has become too strong.
No one can resist Lilith
Another possible answer could lie in the ending of Reaper of Souls. After we, as Nephalem, were able to defeat the incarnation of death, Tyrael said the following in the cinematic:
[…] He is mortal and will be tempted one day. Will he be able to resist when that day comes? Or will he seal our fate?
I found this part particularly exciting because it was such a bad omen. At that time, I had no doubt that our Nephalem would stray from the “right path” sooner or later.

The important keyword here is “temptation.” It is no secret that temptation is particularly Lilith’s specialty. Is it possible that Lilith managed to tempt our Nephalem during this time? She revealed herself to be intriguing and manipulative when it came to the Nephalem during the Sin War.
And after our player character sliced through everything that was not fast enough to get away with surgical precision in D3, temptation would be a smarter strategy than direct confrontation.

The theory here would be that our Nephalem was tempted by Lilith and is part of her allies or even a leader of her cult.
After all, he is a Nephalem and they are known to have unlimited potential. Also for interesting plot twists.
