The streamer Asmongold is considered a guru on Twitch for games like World of Warcraft or Diablo 4. He also represents the typical “American Way of Life”: people should stop complaining and help themselves. Everyone is the architect of their own fortune. He has no understanding for players who complain about the expensive prices of video games.
This was the situation:
- Last night or from our perspective this morning at 7 AM, Asmongold was still hanging out on Twitch, showcasing Diablo 4 and chatting longer with his viewers. There was a lot of criticism of Blizzard and Diablo 4 in his chat.
- It was about the decadent prices in the Diablo series after Diablo Immortal and that Blizzard had canceled the PVE mode of Overwatch. Asmongold agreed with part of the criticism but also noted that people are now so eager to criticize Blizzard that they sometimes go too far with their criticism.
- He said: Some people just want to seem skeptical because that makes them appear clever.
We are covering the release of Diablo 4 on MeinMMO with a ticker.
Asmongold shows Steam library – games after 40 hours are “worth your money”
What sparked the discussion? Asmongold stated that he does not care if Blizzard ruins Diablo 4 after the release. He is so eager for Diablo 4 that he will play it for a month and thus he would have “the money back that he invested.”
He then showed his Steam library and wanted to present games that he only played briefly but were worth his money. Games like Cuphead or Hades, which he completed once and then never touched again.
Asmongold admonishes viewers: Stop watching streams at 3 AM if you have no money
A user in the Twitch chat then wrote something along the lines of: “To say something like that, you must be a millionaire.”
In response, Asmongold got serious:
You think you need to be a millionaire to afford a $70 game? Bro, let me be honest. People might not want to hear this, but it is the truth. If you can’t afford a $70 game and you live in the USA or a First World country, then your smallest problem is the price of video games.
You need to stop thinking about video games. You need to stop watching streams at 3 AM. You need to get your damn life together. And how do I know this? From experience. I was exactly in that situation and did exactly that.
How is this being discussed? Like much of what Asmongold says, the statement is being controversially discussed. People who share his views agree with him: The median income in the USA is over $31,000 per year – the roughly $100 per game wouldn’t be significant. Furthermore, video game prices have remained stable for decades.
Those who view Asmongold critically say that his “work and grind” attitude bothers them. Others say that it is a typical “streamer take.” Probably somewhat detached from reality due to all the money.
This is what lies behind it: From many hints, one can surmise that Asmongold comes from relatively difficult circumstances and has had a long journey. He had to interrupt his planned training to take care of his chronically ill mother, who suffered from COPD, a respiratory disease (via svg.com). At that time, he also began streaming and had extreme success. Therefore, this is certainly where his self-understanding comes from.
How much he has actually changed his life compared to before is not known. He has apparently switched from “Watch streams at 3 AM” to “Make your own streams at 3 AM.”
Whether he really has his life under control seems questionable:
