At the Game Awards 2022, Blizzard showed a new trailer for Diablo 4. In the elaborate cinematic, faithful people fight alongside an angel against the hordes of hell and a powerful demoness. Those who know Diablo understand: These two figures are arguably the most important in the game’s story.
This is the trailer: The new trailer opens with a praying priestess who has an army at her back. A strange symbol is visible on the soldiers’ shields, which Blizzard previously teased with a cloaked figure.
Demonen from hell face the army, ready to attack. After a brief prayer from the priestess, the onslaught begins and hell breaks loose – more or less literally.
The demons rush toward the defenders but are pierced by long spears while the priestess kneels, praying and trusting in heavenly protection before them. The scene is reminiscent of the perfectly executed maneuvers of the famous Roman army.
In the end, two special figures appear: an angel and a demoness. You may already know the demoness Lilith; she is the main antagonist in the upcoming Diablo 4. The angel is shown for the first time. You should definitely know both if you are interested in Diablo.

Inarius and Lilith: The Parents of All Humans in Diablo
Who are the characters? Lilith, the Daughter of Hatred, is the daughter of Mephisto and the niece of Diablo, the Prime Evil. Inarius is one of the angels who fought under Tyrael in the Eternal Conflict and is known for his battlefield successes.
Lilith and Inarius have had enough of the never-ending war between angels and demons. They meet after Inarius is captured and freed by Lilith. The two fall in love with each other and decide to create their own world.
Inarius was able to steal the Worldstone with other rogue angels and created Sanctuary, a world that is supposed to be safe from the Eternal Conflict – and the world where the Diablo games take place.
Lilith and Inarius had children: Nephalem – the beings we all embody in Diablo, whose power is reflected in the various classes. The angel and the demon are literally the parents of the world of Diablo.

So why are they fighting against each other? The trailer ends with Inarius’ line: ‘I am here because of you’ and a spear throw at Lilith. After Sanctuary and the Nephalem were created, the rage of heaven and hell turned against the new world.
Since Nephalem are stronger than angels and demons and the factions continue to search for the Worldstone, Sanctuary was entirely in danger. For this reason, Inarius considered the extermination of his children – which put Lilith into such a rage that she slaughtered all the other demons and angels who stood by her.
Inarius did not forgive her for that and banished her into the Void, as he did not want to kill her himself. He declared himself the ruler of the world – and now, in Diablo 4, there apparently exists a new conflict between ‘Mom and Dad’.

We will likely discover more details in the game itself. Diablo 4 is set to release on June 6, 2023, for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. I already know that the story will captivate me more than in any previous Diablo.
Just Lilith as an antagonist makes me shudder. Normally, you think of Diablo, Baal, and the like, who are undeniably evil, the enemy you must fight. But Lilith is… basically my mother. I don’t want to fight her; I want to join her! Let’s see what will be possible…
