In Diablo 4, there is a clear point of criticism that many can agree on: Blizzard has simply overdone it with the rarest items. They are so rare that searching for them does not provide motivation. Players are considering how to improve the situation.
What decision is being made:
- In Diablo 4, there are so-called “Uber Uniques“: These are 7 unique items. These items drop from monsters higher than level 85, starting from World Tier 4.
- The drop rate of the items is described as “virtually impossible.” There are rumors of chances around 1:800,000. Most players will definitely never see them.
- The items also have no fixed values, meaning they can turn out weaker or stronger, and they are not tradable.
It is simply not understood why Blizzard has decided to make these items drop so rarely, that they are unreachable for all players.
What is the point of loot that no one can obtain?
What is the problem with the items? Players are discussing these Uber Uniques on reddit. It is understood what function the items are supposed to fulfill in Diablo 4: They serve as a mythical “end goal” in Diablo 4, as a carrot for players to chase to keep them engaged.
Just as one holds a carrot in front of a donkey to keep it moving forward, even though it cannot reach it, Blizzard dangles these items in front of players to motivate them to slay the next thousand demons.
However, it is believed that this carrot is indeed unreachable. Loot that no one can ever obtain is ridiculous in a loot game, complains one user. Another player says he would pay a lot of money to know what happened in the Blizzard meeting when discussing the drop rates of the items in Diablo 4.
There is speculation about how the meeting on the drop rates at Blizzard might have gone. One person speculates that there was a discussion: “We don’t have an endgame in Diablo 4, so make the chances for the items four times worse. That is our endgame!”
Another player explains: In earlier Diablo games, the rarest items were too easy to obtain, and everyone ran around with a “best-in-slot” item; however, in Diablo 4, Blizzard has gone totally overboard. He has never met anyone who says they would farm for a Shako, as the probability is simply too low and random to set it as a goal.
Additionally: It is also criticized that even if one is lucky enough to find an Uber Unique, they could still be unfortunate enough to find one with poorly rolled stats.
On the other hand, such a unique item is only active for this season, so one only has a short pleasure from it. After all, no one plays in Eternal Mode.
What might be a way to solve the problem? One player suggests making the items at least tradable. Then one would have an achievable goal: One could collect and trade strong items until they could earn enough gold to buy an Uber Unique. That would provide a clear goal, an attainable carrot.
Others consider: Such an item would be so valuable that it would probably only be sold for many US dollars in real money.
The best option would probably be to increase the drop probability to a level where the carrot seems far away but at least somewhat reachable.
