The loot system in Diablo 4 has been under criticism for months and continues to be a topic for many players. The many affixes make it complicated and are simultaneously confusing and boring.
- Items in Diablo 4 have “affixes,” which are additional values like critical hit chance. Affixes are numerous and require players to examine the loot closely to recognize upgrades for their items.
- Fans compiled all sorts of affixes in August 2023 and created a long list. They came up with over 200 different properties.
- This results in a variety of items, making it hard for players to recognize which items they can actually use. The German Twitch streamer wudijo calls for a loot filter, because there are simply too many useless items.
On Reddit, the topic of affixes and useless loot is discussed in a post on February 4. It states that the loot system in Diablo 4 is “arbitrarily complex” because of the affixes, and the entire process is boring.
With these settings, you can more easily recognize which items are useful for you:
“Confusing items with boring, confusing affixes”
What frustrates the players? The user “Shaka_Walls” shows in his post from February 4 on Reddit an image of an item affix in Diablo 4 and says: “I don’t even care whether this item is good; reading such effects makes me fall asleep.”
In the post, a lucky hit affix is visible, stating: “Up to a chance of up to 26%, reduce the cooldown of skills that are not ultimate skills by 1.5 seconds when dealing ‘bleed’ to elite enemies.”
This means, it could be that you have a lucky hit – and then a percentage chance to obtain cooldowns on skills. But not always, only when you cause “bleed” on elite enemies.
In the comment, “Shaka_Walls” adds: “This is supposed to be a UNIQUE. Why does this game insist on being so boring???”
In response, the user “wetballjones” in the comment explains that the developers had in mind that players wanted “more interesting itemization” and decided on confusing items with boring, confusing affixes.
“25% chance, but only on Tuesdays”
What do other players say about this? Additionally, “wetballjones” in the comment draws a comparison to Diablo 2 and writes that the items there are exciting because you feel their effects and they are easy to understand. The item system in Diablo 4 gives him a headache.
“Diablo 4 should make easily understandable stats that allow interesting combinations. And cool effects for skills,” he writes on Reddit. The user “Otiosei” wants to see affixes that are “simple, clean, clear,” so that everyone knows what they do and what to do to trigger them.
The user “Distinct_Ad_9842” comments: “I’m surprised there isn’t something like a 25% chance to have a 10% chance to cause ‘bleed’ to elite enemies, but only on Tuesdays in months that end with ‘ovember’.” And “AquaticBagpipe” writes: “The ultimate ‘damage on Tuesday’ bonus.”
This is also referenced in the YouTube video by “CarbotAnimations,” where he humorously portrays the loot system in Diablo 4:
Another user notes in the comment that items in Diablo 4 are currently “complex for the sake of complexity. There is no logic or reason for this complexity. They are arbitrarily complex.”
Blizzard has apparently realized that it is difficult for players to make use of their loot. The development team has heard the criticism of the loot system in Diablo 4 and now wants to make changes to the items.
This will target primarily the issue with the numerous affixes in an upcoming season: Diablo 4 is set to receive a major change to items with Season 4, which fans have been waiting for
