Boss materials and gems are two important resources in Diablo 4, especially for endgame activities. The ARPG even gives them to you, but it can sometimes happen that you overlook them while grinding.
Since Season 4, you are receiving the materials to summon bosses from more sources and the gems themselves no longer drop as items since Season 2, but in the form of fragments. You obtain these among other things from events, the Tree of Whispers, and as drops from enemies with a “purple aura.“`
What are the materials important for? The gems provide you with certain bonuses, such as to your maximum health, your armor, or critical hit damage. Many builds especially require rubies, which provide a bonus to maximum health when you use them in armor.
It is not uncommon to need five rubies for your build in the endgame – that’s a whopping 50,000 fragments for the royal variant of the gems. In our overview, you will find the strongest endgame builds for Season 4 in Diablo 4.
The boss materials are also useful in the endgame if you want to expand your builds. Many builds only become really strong with certain uniques or even Uber uniques – and they primarily drop from certain bosses.
How many fragments do I need? For crafting the gems, you need especially many fragments at the higher levels:
- Damaged gem: 10 fragments, 1,000 gold
- Gem: 100 fragments, 10,000 gold
- Flawless gem: 1,000 fragments, 100,000 gold
- Royal gem: 10,000 fragments, 1,000,000 gold

How do I get the materials for free? Basically, you receive boss materials and gem fragments for free when you play the season and use the following features:
- farming “Wolf’s Honor” from the Iron Wolves
- completing stages in the season journey
Why is it easy to overlook? The Wolf’s Honor is not a “requirement.” While some useful items will be lost to you if you do not collect your rewards, there is no special season mechanic this time that you absolutely need. The season journey can also be quickly forgotten when you are grinding and leveling up faster than you can distribute points and collect rewards.
How do I farm Wolf’s Honor? In Season 4, the Iron Wolves are the main theme and a fixed part of all Hell floods – which are already available at World Level 1. When you play the Hell flood, you advance your reputation with the Iron Wolves. This specifically means: Everything you do in the Hell flood, i.e., opening chests, slaying monsters, and completing events, advances your progress.
Within the reputation system, you can earn rewards from the mercenaries. The rewards of the total 18 levels include among other things legendaries, uniques, crafting recipes, but also boss materials and gem fragments. By the way, you can farm and collect them with any character.

By increasing your Wolf’s Honor, you also progress your season journey. Because: Within the journey, there are tasks that relate to your rank with the Iron Wolves.
How do I complete the season journey? Even in Season 4, there is again the feature of the season journey with its seven stages. With each completion of a stage, you receive reward chests. These contain among other things legendaries, uniques, crafting materials, but also gem fragments and boss materials.
Within the stages, you will expect tasks such as:
- Increase your Wolf’s Honor
- Complete Iron Wolf events during the Hell flood
- Complete cellar/dungeons/world events
- Collect herb bundles/angel’s touch/iron chunks
- Defeat Grigoire/The Echo of Varshan
- Upgrade paraglyphs
To complete the stages, you must complete a specific number of tasks per level. If you fully complete the season journey and finish each stage 100%, you will even receive a “secret player title” as a bonus. However, to achieve this, you must face the toughest bosses in Diablo 4.
