As of July 3rd, the PlayStation Network (PSN) is unavailable for many users. PlayStation players cannot access online games such as Destiny, The Elder Scrolls Online, or Final Fantasy XIV .
About 40 minutes ago, around 8:10 PM, US sites reported that the PSN network service has gone down. This comes just in time for the 3-day weekend in the USA. Tomorrow, July 4th, is the national holiday ‘Independence Day’, known from film and television, featuring aliens and Will Smith. Typically, it is celebrated much more peacefully with festivities, national pride, barbecues, fireworks, picnics, and a summer atmosphere.
The exact reason behind the network outage is unclear. It is not part of a regular maintenance or anything like that. The most likely cause seems to be an attack on the network. Last Christmas, there were similar dramas involving neurotic “hackers”, disappointed gamers, and Kim Schmitz.
At Sony, they are “naturally” aware of the issues and ask players worldwide for their patience while looking into it.
