What does Season 9 of Destiny 2 still have to offer in the new year? We take a look at the upcoming content and summarize what we know about it so far.
What’s happening in Destiny 2 right now? Currently, Season 9 in Destiny 2 is running on low. Until January 14, Guardians can still bake various treats during the Winter Event “The Dawning”. You could also enjoy the Iron Banner again over the holidays.
However, there have been no new specific content regarding the Season of Dawn during this time. That will change very soon.
New Content Coming in Season 9
In the new year, the Season of Dawn holds many new contents for you. Here are the most important content drops you can look forward to in Season 9. By the way, it all starts with the Weekly Reset on January 7.
New Exotic Weapons
In Season 9, there will be two more new weapon exotics that have already been confirmed:
- the hand cannon “The Devil’s Ruin”
- the fusion rifle “Bastion”
Both are tied to their own exotic quest and will only be available to Season Pass buyers. The quest for the hand cannon starts on January 7, while the fusion rifle can only be hunted from January 28.
What the weapons can do exactly and what is known about the quests so far can be found here: This month, 2 new exotic weapons are coming to Destiny 2 – Here’s what we know
New Content for the Sundial Activity
The seasonal activity in the Season of Dawn is called Sundial. There, you work through various encounters, need to defeat waves of enemies, and also master different mechanics until you face a big boss at the end. Defeating it gives you loot.
After new Obelisks and new bosses for this activity have already been released, some additional changes are expected in 2020. For example, with the Weekly Reset on January 7, the legendary Sundial – a new difficulty level for this activity – will start.
However, it is still not known how exactly the legendary difficulty will differ from the regular Sundial experience. However, an increase in the recommended Power level and additional modifiers that will make the experience more challenging are expected.
Additionally, on February 4, the last new boss for the Sundial will be introduced – the Psion Flayer Inotam, the Triune Oblivion. Since the story of Season 9 revolves around the interference with the Cabal plans (led by a council of Psion Flayers) for an alternate outcome of the Red War, the last Psion Flayer boss could also advance the seasonal story.
Empyreal Foundation
This event or activity is perhaps the biggest mystery of Season 9. Bungie has not released any information about it yet. However, there are already some theories about what players might expect there.
Some Guardians speculate that this event could serve as some sort of catch-up mechanic for the ongoing Season 9. For example, entries for event items have been found in the data through which one can achieve
- greater progress on time-lost weapon bounties
- level up the Obelisks faster
- or acquire buffs and consumables
Others believe it could be something similar to the Tribute Hall from Season 7 – including a possible quest like with Bad Karma.
There is also a theory that we could be working towards a potential return of Trials within the context of the Empyreal Foundation – through a transformation of Mercury.
The theory suggests that during a “season project” of Season 9, we help Osiris and Saint-14 in rebuilding Mercury and the Lighthouse in a way – restoring a timeline where Mercury was not a sandy ruin.
This could then lead to the return of Trials. You can find more details here: Are we already preparing the return of Trials in Destiny 2 without realizing it?
Crimson Days
From February 11 to 18, the Crimson Days event will take place in Destiny 2. With this event, Guardians come together more closely with their friends and celebrate Valentine’s Day in a seasonal manner.
What exactly awaits the Guardians this time has not yet been revealed by the studio, but it is assumed that there will also be a double playlist in PvP and possibly a new weapon quest (last year it was a bow).
Many are curious about the event-specific rewards. It is expected that event-specific engrams will not be available for Crimson Days either. Instead, it is anticipated that many rewards will be obtainable via Eververse, as has been the case for previous events, with only a small part being earnable through gameplay.
Surprises
It also seems that there could be some unannounced surprises in Season 9.
On one hand, a still secret weapon exotic (power slot) has appeared in the database with Season 9, which many fans believe could be released this season – possibly in connection with the Empyreal Foundation.
On the other hand, Bungie’s Creative Lead Robbie Stevens has teased some surprises for the new year 2020 in a tweet.
So it’s quite possible that one or two additional contents could await us that have not yet been communicated on the roadmap or otherwise.
Which of the upcoming content from Season 9 are you looking forward to the most? Is that enough to keep you entertained until the next season?
