Destiny 2 and Next-Gen: Exciting times are coming for Destiny 2. Not only does the release of the Beyond Light expansion on November 10 usher in a new chapter – the new next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft are also launching soon.
The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will launch worldwide on November 10, right alongside the release of Beyond Light. Shortly after, the PS5 will follow on November 12 in the USA, Canada, Japan, Mexico, and several other countries. For us in Germany and the rest of Europe, it will be available on November 19.
Console players can continue their adventure on the current gen, meaning on PS4 and Xbox One, but they can also carry on their journey as Guardians on the new consoles and take advantage of the capabilities of the new hardware.
Everything you need to know about Destiny 2 on the Next-Gen Consoles
When exactly is the Next-Gen upgrade coming? The upgrade will not be available at the launch of the new consoles, but will be released in December 2020. The next-gen optimized version of Destiny 2 will be released on December 8.
Can I still play at the launch of the new consoles? Yes, you can still start directly on the PS5 and the two new Xbox models at launch. Destiny 2 will be playable on these platforms through backward compatibility – but without the enhancements of the next-gen upgrade yet.
What features are included in the Next-Gen upgrade for the respective consoles? Depending on which next-gen console you choose, Destiny 2 will offer the following on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S:

With the next-gen upgrade, players will finally be able to adjust the field of view on consoles in Destiny. Many Guardians have desired this feature for a long time. Bungie’s goal is to provide a similar range to that of the PC. However, this feature is currently still being tested, and concrete details will follow shortly before the update is released.
Furthermore, Bungie emphasizes: Although there will be significant improvements in certain aspects like loading times or opening and inspecting the character inventory, some loading times will still depend on the network and matchmaking. This means loading activities on next-gen might still take a bit longer when searching for opponents or teammates.
And just recently, there was another big surprise: Bungie announced on November 10 that the PS5 and Xbox Series X will run at 120 FPS in PvP.
Can new and old console generations play together? Yes, Destiny 2 will feature cross-generation play. Specifically, this means:
- Players on Xbox One can play with Guardians on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S
- Players on PS4 can play with Guardians on PS5
What about proper crossplay? Although there is still no set date for this, real crossplay is also said to be coming according to Bungie. In an interview about Beyond Light, Mark Noseworthy, the General Manager of Destiny 2, told MeinMMO: Bungie hopes to introduce real crossplay across all platforms by next year (2021). This would have high priority in the studio.
So it seems only a matter of time before Guardians can finally team up on PC as well as consoles, regardless of which platform they are playing on.
