The online shooter Destiny 2 still has problems with the new PvP mode “Breakthrough”. After a longer pause, it returned to Competitive on Tuesday and was removed again on Friday.
This is Breakthrough: “Breakthrough” is a 4vs4 mode and a variant of Control. The PvP mode was introduced with Forsaken. Unlike the other new mode “Gambit”, it consistently causes difficulties.
Breakthrough was introduced early on, but it was delayed until it finally arrived with Forsaken and was shortly thereafter disabled. Now Bungie has brought it back again, but once more, problems have arisen and “Breakthrough” was removed from the Comp playlist.
How Breakthrough works:
- In the 1st phase of a round, players must capture the central control point “Breaker”
- In the 2nd phase, the team that captured the point must take the enemy’s home point, which they must defend
The problem: The mode rewards the team that plays passively and ignores the “Breaker” in the first round, letting the others do the work. Additionally, there is the extra problem that players from the stronger team can farm the other team right from spawn.
This resulted in rounds dragging on forever because no one captured the Breaker. However, the stronger team ruthlessly farmed kills, to progress certain challenges, like the one for Luna’s Howl.
Thus, the mode was a total disaster the first time and was removed from the “Competitive” playlist. Players were already asked for feedback a few weeks ago.
Now, they have revised “Breakthrough” and brought it back on October 30 with the new patch.
And forever greets the removal of Breakthrough
What Bungie changed: In the patch notes for Destiny 2 on Tuesday, there are actually some changes to “Breakthrough.”
However, they likely did nothing to change the actual mode, but only aimed to prevent a “stalemate” situation from occurring, where the game stalls in the 1st round because no one wants to capture the Breaker.
Now the team that has the highest capture progress wins the Breaker when a time limit runs out. This means the match is forced to end. However, this does not seem to have changed the actual problems of the mode.
This time what happened: The exact same thing happened as the first time. Players are still complaining that a “passive playstyle” in Breakthrough leads to an advantage and victory.
The mode is simply totally broken and is not fun. The Guardians of Destiny 2 do not understand the idea behind Breakthrough at all.
Thus, Bungie has once again removed the mode from the “Competitive” playlist. It is unknown whether Bungie plans to revise and bring it back. They are at least asking for feedback.
The Guardians are quite incredulous about this. They wonder why Bungie has the “PvP Lab” if such a mode goes live.
