Many Guardians draw great motivation from achieving predefined goals, completing collections, and “filling bars.” In other words, they want to collect items and reputation, see their progress, and want other Guardians to see their progress too.
In Destiny 1, there were several progress indicators, like the reputation levels of various factions or, above all, the Grimoire points. Encountering a Guardian with many Grimoire points beyond 5000 meant you were up against an experienced player. Such indicators have been removed in Destiny 2.
The Grimoire has been abolished, much to the dismay of many Guardians, and when you rise in reputation with merchants, you only receive an engram. In the game itself, you cannot see what faction rank you have currently reached. Through external apps like DIM, this progress can be viewed, but such indicators are sorely missed in the game.
The wish for 2018 can be summarized as follows: Guardians want reasons to log in regularly and play together with their friends. Loot alone cannot provide long-term motivation. Progress indicators, reputation levels, and all things that can be completed, for which points must be collected or bars filled, are desired—especially when exclusive cosmetic items come with certain progress milestones. So they can boast to their friends and other Guardians: “Look what I achieved!”
In December, Destiny 2 took a couple of steps in this direction. You can now complete the weapon forge, which is a weeks-long task, or earn armor ornaments by completing specific goals.
But Destiny 2 needs more and new goals in 2018 that allow you to collect, complete, and fill.
