In Destiny 2 the Season of Dawn introduces a new PvE activity. Read what we currently know about the seasonal centerpiece ‘Sundial’.
What’s new in Destiny 2: In Destiny, the new Season 9 starts next week. This allows us to revisit Mercury and the Warlock Osiris. The focus of the next Destiny chapter is the fight against the time-traveling Vex and the rescue of the greatest Titan who ever lived.
Joining are new exotics and a fresh season pass, also content for PvE. On December 10th, coinciding with the season start, a new activity will also kick off.
This is what the activity is about: The new seasonal activity is called ‘the Sundial’. The massive apparatus was built by Osiris on Mercury. From there, you embark on a time-travel journey with up to six Guardians.
The Sundial features a matchmaking system, so you will be automatically assigned support. Similar to the Vex Offensive. The PvE activity is mostly modeled after the popular Menagerie. There are supposed to be different encounters.
Through a portal, you enter different realities and timelines, you shouldn’t know what to expect before entering the portal. Community Manager Deej revealed: “Your first experience with the Sundial will surely not be like the last one.”
This is how the Sundial works: There will be a kind of hub area, where you can see the huge Sundial and opens the time travel portals. These lead you to different encounters. It seems that we will primarily go up against the Cabal.
In the individual encounters, it’s not just about defeating waves of enemies. The Guardians have to master many different mechanics and face challenging boss fights. Different strategies will allow you to complete the encounters quicker or slower.
Well-prepared Guardians reach the end of the activity faster – and thus also get their loot faster. While the individual encounters have a timer, don’t worry. The activity will always be possible to complete, even if it takes you a bit longer.
If you have accumulated enough points in the individual encounters, it’s time for the final boss. Bungie promised that with the progressing season, there will be new bosses to fight in the Sundial.
This is what the encounter looks like in the stream: During the reveal stream on December 4th, Bungie showed how an encounter in the Sundial might look. The Guardians had 5 minutes to fend off the Cabal.
In the shown timeline, the Cabal have won the war against humanity. They can wield the Light as a weapon, just like we Guardians. With this ability, the Red Legion can fire powerful lasers from space.
In the shown encounter, players must defeat mini-bosses to pick up a sphere upon their death. This sphere must be thrown at the Cabal boss in the center of the map. After a few moments, an impressive laser beam appears and burns away the boss’s shield.
There will be a hard mode: The Sundial is supposed to keep the Guardians busy throughout the whole season. Besides the changing bosses, the PvE activity will also get a hard mode.
Currently, not much is known about the harder variant. But we do know that:
- The start of the hard mode is in January 2020. It will kick off on January 7th, according to the roadmap.
- There will be no matchmaking in hard mode. In contrast to the normal version, you will need a pre-made fireteam. Bungie warned: “Bring well-equipped friends and level your seasonal artifact for a chance to succeed.”
