Bungie has announced new pinnacle weapons for Season 5 of Destiny 2. But what lies behind the new firearms? And what do the fans think about it?
With the start of Season 5 on November 27, 2018, Guardians in Destiny 2 will be able to earn a total of three new pinnacle weapons. Can Bungie excite more players with these than with the top weapons in Season 4?
This is Bungie’s goal with the new pinnacle weapons in Season 5

With the reveal of the new pinnacle weapons, Bungie is making a significant step towards the community. For the upcoming Season 5, the studio has responded to fan feedback about the previous pinnacle arsenal and fulfills some of their biggest wishes.
What are pinnacle weapons, anyway? Pinnacle weapons are special legendary weapons that are hidden behind lengthy quests and can only be earned with tremendous time and effort. They offer unique perks that cannot be found on any other weapons and are among the best firearms in Destiny 2.
The pool of pinnacle weapons is expanding: Many players have wanted this since the introduction of the first pinnacle weapon in Season 3 – the Redrix Claymore. Many have tirelessly complained since then that pinnacle weapons were only available through the Crucible, i.e., PvP. There has been a lack of a counterpart in PvE or in the Gambit mode.
This will change with the start of the Season of the Forge. Players can look forward to the following weapons:
- the legendary fusion rifle “The Question of the Vanguard”
- the legendary auto rifle “Breakneck” in Gambit
- and the legendary grenade launcher “The Summit” from the Crucible
Now, everyone in the game has a chance to enjoy a pinnacle weapon.

Additionally, the entire pool of pinnacle weapons from Season 4 can still be earned in Season 5. These include:
- the legendary hand cannon Luna’s Howl
- the legendary hand cannon Not Forgotten
- and the legendary pulse rifle Redrix’s Broadsword
These three weapons are, however, only available through PvP. In total, players can secure 6 pinnacle weapons.

The pinnacle weapons are becoming more accessible: Bungie revealed during the weapon announcement how players can acquire the new firearms – much to the delight of numerous fans. Compared to the previous pinnacle weapons, it will now require significantly less work to seize the new top firearms.
This does not mean that they are being given away, but the associated tasks are now realistically achievable for a significantly larger mass of players than the requirements in Season 4.
With this, Bungie is fulfilling another big wish of numerous fans. Many found the previous weapons quite attractive and interesting, but the effort required was simply too high or realistically unachievable within the limited available time.

Bungie promotes weaker weapon types: Moreover, Bungie is attempting to bring certain weapon types back into focus with the new pinnacle weapons that currently play a rather minor role in Destiny 2. This is something many fans have wished for.
Currently, auto and fusion rifles are in a somewhat neglected and weak state compared to many other weapon types. Grenade launchers are indeed used quite often, but they are also not currently part of the meta.
With the three new pinnacle weapons, these weapon types are now getting stronger attention. And perhaps there will be new sandbox adjustments in the Season 5 update that could make these weapon types even more attractive. Bungie is known for shaking up the meta with new Seasons or expansions.

This is how fans are receiving the new pinnacle weapons of Season 5
Fans have mixed opinions: The fans have received the new weapons with mixed feelings so far. This is reflected in numerous comments on Reddit and here on MeinMMO.
What fans are looking forward to: On one side, many are excited that there will soon be pinnacle weapons outside of the Crucible and that they can now be earned with somewhat less effort. The individual weapons themselves and their unique perks are also exciting for many Guardians, who are already looking forward to hunting down these new firearms and finally trying them out.

What is being criticized: On the other hand, there is also criticism and skepticism. Some players believe the weapons are – especially compared to the pinnacle weapons of Season 4 – nothing really special. Additionally, it is often criticized that these are essentially reskins of existing weapons that are not even particularly creative.
For the Vanguard’s fusion rifle, many players also cannot quite picture how the weapon’s perk is supposed to work. While the description sounds quite interesting, essential details have not been clearly communicated.
There are already some voices claiming that the grenade launcher “The Summit” is already overpowered, fearing a grenade launcher meta in the Crucible.
