Players on current consoles are frustrated with long loading times and poor performance in Destiny 2 . A new video now shows how fast the MMO shooter is on the Xbox Series X.
This is what next-gen performance looks like: Recently, first testers have been able to extensively evaluate the Xbox Series X. The magazine The Verge was among these testers and takes a look at performance, noise, and loading times.
Tom Warren from The Verge shared a video on YouTube where he tests the performance of Destiny 2 on Microsoft’s next-gen console. You’ll see how quickly he gets to character selection or various locations, and how fast menu and equipment changes occur.
What you can see in the video:
- It takes 44 seconds from the start of the game to character selection
- He flies to the Tower in about 30 seconds
- Equipment changes in the menu occur without stuttering or long wait times
- The game runs “smoother” – Warren notes that this difference is most noticeable when you play yourself
Keep in mind that this gameplay is based on the version of Destiny 2 that is representative of current consoles – just as you play the game. The update for PS5 and Xbox Series X, which for example brings a higher frame rate of 60 frames per second and 4K resolution, will only be released with the launch of Beyond Light.
Long loading times on consoles drive Guardians mad
Especially on the current consoles PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, loading times in Destiny 2 are an acute problem. These include:
- Minutes-long waiting screens
- Choppy weapon swaps make spontaneous adjustments in PvP impossible
- Severe stuttering during mod installation
According to Forbes, loading times and performance of the Xbox Series X can be compared with the PC version of Destiny 2 (with SSD). On PC, there is also an adjustable field of view, the FoV – whether next-gen consoles will have access to that has not yet been communicated by Bungie.

What about the PlayStation? We currently cannot say how fast the loading times will be on Sony’s new console PS5 . The installed SSD exceeds the performance of the Xbox Series in terms of speed, but how this will be reflected in practice is still unclear.
PS Guardians can, however, expect a noticeable improvement. Loading times today (September 30, 9:00 AM) in our “PS4 Pro” test looked like this:
- It took 1 minute and 57 seconds from the PS4 dashboard to character selection
- The flight to the Tower averaged one minute
These tests were conducted with an external 500 GB SSD from SanDisk. The console’s internal hard drive shows quite different values: Well 10 minutes from the start screen to the Tower means you can leisurely brew tea before saving the universe.
From November 10, Destiny 2 will consume 40% less storage and will receive further technical updates: Destiny 2 has a 6-year-old engine problem – Can Beyond Light change that?
