For some, it has already been hinted, now it is official: 2 legendary Guardians from Destiny 2 are actually homosexual and in love with each other.
Bungie has now confirmed this: As there have been some discussions around this topic lately, Narrative Designer Robert Brookes from Bungie has made it unmistakably clear: Yes, the characters Saint-14 and Osiris are gay. And they have always been.
On Twitter, Brookes stated that he has been writing these two characters as gay since he joined Bungie. Because that’s how they were lore-wise even before his time. It just has never been explicitly stated.
But when he saw how many uncertainties existed in the community about things like “Is Zavala a Guardian?”, he recently thought he should say something about this.
According to him, the fact that the two NPCs are gay is no secret, no speculation, or no puzzle that the community needs to solve. They simply are.
What was behind the speculations? Some fans have suspected this for a long time, but since the beginning of the new Season 12, attentive players have stumbled upon hints in the lore that the mysterious Warlock and the Vex-destroying machine Saint might be more than just friends. A lot seemed to indicate romance or even love between the two.
For instance, Osiris has found notes from Saint that he had hidden on his ship. There, Saint refers to Osiris as “his fiery phoenix.” Among other things, the Wandering also made remarks about the two in a dialogue – that they might be together.
Accordingly, there were some discussions in the community about whether there might really be more going on between them than just camaraderie, especially since Osiris breaks time to save his friend from death while risking the fate of the entire world.
With the new hints, it seemed more and more like love to some – and now we also have the official certainty.
This is how it is received: The community has been responding well to this news so far. Many see it as important – not only for the game but also as a general statement from Bungie as an open-minded studio that publicly stands for tolerance and diversity.
Although Destiny had already suggested homosexual characters in the past, none were as central as Osiris or Saint-14. Ana Bray, who has come back into the spotlight in the context of the “Beyond Light” story, has a relationship with another woman. The Awoken Queen Mara Sov has often been rumored to have flings with Lord Shaxx, but according to lore, her true love is Sjur Eido, who was killed during the Reef Wars.
Who are these two exactly? They are two important lore characters from the Destiny universe.
- the Warlock Osiris – the mentor of Ikora Rey and former Vanguard Commander (before he was exiled by the Speaker).
- and the Titan Saint-14 – one of the most famous Titans in the history of the Last City, who casually refers to himself as “the greatest Titan who ever lived”. He served as the first Titan Vanguard leader and was the right hand of the Speaker.
Both have a captivating, mystical backstory and became more prominent in the narrative during Season 9. There we had to help Osiris save Saint-14 (which the Warlock himself failed to do). Since his rescue, the 14th Saint has been in the Tower hangar leading the Trials of Osiris. And Osiris is back as part of Season 12 and is working with us and Uldren to take out new Hive constructs.
But as we now know, the two are apparently connected by far more than just “the work as Guardians.” What do you think of this announcement? Do you see Saint and Osiris differently now, or could you better understand some lore pieces or story developments?
