In Destiny 2, there is a peculiar situation. Developer Bungie has to nerf the exotic auto rifle “Hard Light” in such a way that the lore text is no longer true. It referenced Steve Jobs and Apple – but that no longer fits.
This is the situation with Hard Light: The weapon “Hard Light” has been around for ages in Destiny. It is an auto rifle where the bullets can penetrate targets and ricochet off hard surfaces.
Hard Light is an ancient weapon, dating back to Destiny 1, and for more than 5 years it never really made a name for itself. There were always other auto rifles like SUROS Regime, “the White Queen”, that were better and cooler.
That changed with Season 10 in Destiny 2. With the Update 2.8.0 , auto rifles became stronger and suddenly the best weapon was “Hard Light.”
According to statistics, “Hard Light” was the mega weapon in Destiny 2’s PvP in March. The weapon had no damage drop-off, making it powerful at all ranges. As a masterwork, it could be used like a laser – there was almost no recoil after a hidden adjustment.
Professionals were even able to lure their victims around corners and into cover because they perfectly utilized the ricochets of the weapon.
Bungie reacted and announced a nerf.
This is what the nerf does: On April 29, the nerf for Hard Light was released. The weapon received a damage drop-off of 0.7 and the ricochets now deal less damage in PvP than in PvE. Additionally, the weapon now creates a stronger recoil – which had previously been reduced due to a hidden change.
For the lore text, the nerf in damage drop-off is crucial.
The lore text references Apple and Steve Jobs – now it lies
This is the problem: “Hard Light” has had a lore text since Destiny 1 from the weapon manufacturer Omolon, the “tech geeks” among the weapon forgers of Destiny.
In the lore text, Omolon promotes Hard Light in a way reminiscent of how Steve Jobs introduced products for Apple.
They present Hard Light as three different products that ultimately come in one package:
Today, we present three revolutionary products.
First, we have a quickly configurable interface for outgoing damage.
Secondly, we have a projectile that ricochets off any surface.
And finally, we have a projection weapon platform with infinite range and no drop-off.
So three new products in the Omolon portfolio. But unlike other product launches, we are not releasing these three at staggered intervals.
They all appear at once.
In one package.
In absolutely limited edition.

This point is important:
- “And lastly, we have a projection weapon platform with infinite range and no drop-off.”
Because it was precisely this (damage) “drop-off” that the advertisement text excluded, which Bungie now had to patch into the game to end the reign of the weapon.
These are the reactions: On Reddit, players are making fun of this point – especially in relation to the reference to Apple:
- One user says: Honestly, “infinite range with zero drop-off” that suddenly stops after over 5 years – that makes the Apple reference perfect.
- Another user says: Omolon probably disabled the feature to sell guardians a new product with the same capability.
