Right now, as the only highlight of Season 16 in Destiny 2, the Guardian Games 2022, is approaching, players are increasingly wondering: “What comes next?” Only Bungie employees know that for sure, but apparently they are already more than excited about the new content. MeinMMO has gathered information and statements about the upcoming Season 17 for you.
The campaign surrounding the Witch Queen, the Witness and his student in Destiny 2 currently features many interesting storylines. While the experienced Iron Lord Saladin shows a young wolf the right path, players are mastering the new challenges.
- This evening, the Grandmaster challenge in the “Oryx’s Vow” raid begins.
- On May 3rd, the Guardian Games 2022 take place, kicking off the class competition.
- And in the Trials, players will be able to vote over the map on May 6th.
Moreover, not much is known yet. It’s no wonder that players immediately perked up when some Bungie employees talked about the upcoming Season 17. And it certainly sounds like Bungie intends to keep the suspense in the story.
Who sparked the hype? The initial hype for the upcoming Season 17 was sparked by Hazel Monforton. She is a Senior Narrative Designer at Bungie and has recently started working, especially on seasonal content for Destiny 2.
When she posted on Twitter on April 17th, she immediately caught the attention of the Destiny 2 community.
She teases the new Season 17 in her tweet as “phenomenal” and promises “you will love it.”
With this opinion, she seems not to be alone at Bungie. Clearly, the new Season 17 has also deeply excited other Bungie employees, like Ben Platnick. He is a VFX Artist at Bungie and primarily works on weapons and emotes.
For example, he was responsible for the VFX changes of the exotic grenade launcher “Parasite” and collaborated on the unique resonance design of the exclusive Raid Sparrows “Lightweaver”.
Ben writes that the new Season 17 is the best work of the team and other contributors.
Additionally, it also seems that players can expect another aha moment in Season 17, similar to what happened during the Witch Queen campaign.
Vince Ste. Marie, a Performance Test Engineer at Bungie, wrote in response to Hazel Monforton’s tweet:
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a scene while testing [Season 17] and responded with “Oh, holy shit.”

Is it all just PR or genuine excitement? Of course, one should assume that Bungie employees are excited about their own work. But it genuinely sounds like something that could make the upcoming Season 17 quite thrilling. Especially if you are already thrilled by the new way Bungie is currently building its stories.
This is currently known about Season 17 in Destiny 2
Currently, Destiny 2 is already planning a major update for weapons and meta. First information for players will likely be released on Thursday, April 21st.
Additionally, some details of Season 17 have already been mentioned by Bungie.
- The Iron Banner will be revamped and perhaps enhanced.
- There will be a new dungeon for 3 players.
- Starting from Season 17, old raids and dungeons will be on rotation.
What happens during Season 17 in the story? While a few upcoming contents are known, the development of the story in Season 17 remains a mystery. Especially since Bungie has currently left some storylines completely open, which would still make sense to continue.
Basicly, if we use the past as a benchmark, it is rather unlikely that Bungie will continue directly with the story of Savathun in Season 17. It is more likely that players will first wrap up a few other open story ends.
Especially the exotic mission “Vox Obscura” has great potential for a continuation. Over several weeks, players could listen to some voice lines with Caiatl and Commander Zavala there. Perhaps players will soon learn what happened to Calus and the Leviathan.
Additionally, the fate of Lord Saladin is also interesting. Will he stay with the Cabal and soon have no time to come to the Tower? Does he then also determine the fate of Crow, who is currently deep in his debt? It wouldn’t be the first time that a Hunter Guardian takes a position at the Vanguard due to an old debt.
Or will we soon hear from Ana Bray again? After all, she continues to work in the Tower on the restoration of the Warmind “Rasputin”. Perhaps she has resorted to unscrupulous means and utilized the controversial S.I.V.A. technology to fully reactivate him?
There are plenty of open story ends for Season 17: Destiny 2, as always, has several options for a continuation in Season 17. But as it looks, we can only hope that Bungie employees do not promise too much and that the upcoming contents remain exciting for the players.
