Currently, the Season of Dawn is running in Destiny 2. In this overview article, we summarize all the important information about the new season. Here, you’ll get a compact overview of what new content awaits you in Season 9, what’s included in the new Season Pass, or what the story is about.
What is a Season, anyway? The Seasons provide Destiny 2 with new content. Unlike previous major DLCs, a season offers comparatively less content and distributes its seasonal content over a longer period. However, a season costs less and can even be played partially for free.
Additionally, seasons can now be purchased and played individually, unlike Year 2 – they are not just available in bundles. This way, everyone can choose what they want to play, and they can skip a season entirely if they are not interested.
In short: Seasons refer to new content that is introduced to the game over a specific period.
What is the Season 9 of Dawn all about? Destiny 2 is currently in its 9th season. This is called the Season of Dawn and aims to keep players engaged from December 2019 to March 2020 with
- a new story,
- a new activity
- fresh Battle Pass rewards from the new Season Pass
- new exotic quests and loot
- as well as numerous changes
to keep them entertained.

Destiny 2: The story of Season 9
At the beginning of Year 3, the Guardians fought against the Hive on the Moon in the massive Shadowkeep expansion and encountered the Darkness there. Additionally, the ongoing Season 8 was about fending off a new Vex threat. But what is the Season of Dawn about?
This is how the Destiny 2 story continues in the Season of Dawn: The open ending of the Shadowkeep story will not be addressed in Season 9. Bungie has already hinted at this indirectly. However, the storyline around the Vex attack from Season 8 is woven further.
Two important lore characters from the Destiny universe come into the spotlight:
- the Warlock Osiris
- the Titan Saint-14 (“The 14th Holy One”)
You can find out more about these two characters here: Why Season 9 could be a feast for lore fans
Even if a real finale of Season 8 was missing in the game, we apparently defeated the Undying Mind, the great Vex threat from the Season of Undying. This is evident from the Season 9 trailer and new lore that was published before the Season of Dawn on Bungie.net.
However, our victory over the Undying Mind came at a price. The time on the planet Mercury has been disturbed and split into countless realities. From this arises a new threat.
A Cabal faction led by a council of Psion Guardians wants to exploit the disrupted timeline and undo the Guardians’ victory against the Red Legion from the original campaign of Destiny 2. The Guardians must restore the broken timeline and thwart the Cabal’s plans.
Additionally, we must help the Warlock Osiris save his old ally – the Titan Saint-14 – from death, even though he is already dead. To do this, we have to repair the Sundial, a kind of time machine, and travel through time.

What happens to the power level in Season 9? Many players have long wondered whether and how the maximum power level will rise in Season 9. Just before the start of Season 9, Bungie finally provided clarity.
Yes, the max power level will rise in the Season of Dawn – and for all Guardians. The new level caps are as follows:
- The Powerful Cap rises in Season 9 from power level 950 to 960
- The Pinnacle Cap will then be at 970
By the way, even in Season 9, you will essentially be able to level your Guardians infinitely beyond the Pinnacle Cap – just like in Season 8 through the seasonal artifact.

These contents will disappear from Destiny 2 with the start of Season 9: Already before the release of Shadowkeep and the start of Year 2, Bungie announced that they might remove old seasonal content from Destiny 2.
This will already take place at the beginning of Season 9. Thus, some contents from Season 8 will not make it into the Season of Dawn.
More about this can be found here: Everything that will disappear from Destiny 2 at the end of Season 8
Destiny 2: Buy the Season 9 Season Pass
Why a Season Pass? While free updates and content available to all players are available in Season 9, those who want to fully enjoy the Season of Dawn, and seasons in general, cannot avoid purchasing the corresponding Season Pass.
Because regardless of whether it’s about the additional seasonal premium rewards, exclusive activities, or new exotics – the most exciting content of a season is only available through the Season Pass. The Season of Dawn is no exception.
How to buy the Season 9 Season Pass in Destiny 2? In principle, a Season Pass for each season in Year 3 of Destiny 2 can be purchased individually. This is done in-game via the Eververse or the corresponding menu in the director.
A Season Pass – including for Season 9 – currently costs 1,000 Silver, which is about €10.
Buyers of the Collector’s Edition or the Digital Deluxe Edition of Shadowkeep have immediate access to all four seasons of Year 3. For owners of the regular Shadowkeep expansion, only Season 8 is included.
By the way, since December 10, the start of Season 9, the Digital Deluxe version of Shadowkeep is no longer available for purchase.
