Trion Worlds is currently working on a revamped version of the online shooter Defiance. The developers are deliberately not making a sequel, which is due to the release of Destiny 2.
Defiance was the MMO shooter before Destiny made the genre popular in 2014. Launched as a sci-fi shooter in April 2013, Defiance was ahead of its time. Later, the MMO shooter faded somewhat into obscurity. Because Defiance was released only for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, it fell behind with the decline of this console generation.
That is set to change now. With some effort, Defiance is set to be re-released for PS4 and Xbox One – in the process, the title will undergo a facelift.
Port for PS4 and Xbox One planned for Defiance
In 2014, when the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were relatively new on the market, the developers of the online shooter Defiance stated that no version for the new console generation was planned. The player base was simply too small, and a port would not be worthwhile. Therefore, Defiance was released exclusively for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. Now, at the end of 2017, that seems to have changed.
A Defiance not only graphically improved
According to Trion Worlds, about 120,000 active players are playing Defiance on all platforms. A revamped version of the shooter is now in development, which brings not only graphical improvements.
Editors from the website DualShockers had the opportunity to see an early tech demo of the PS4 version, which left a significantly more detailed and impressive impression in direct comparison with the PS3 version. The developers want to achieve a higher frame rate in addition to improved graphics and a resolution of 1080p, as well as introduce some gameplay changes.
The team stated that they want to wait for player feedback to see what changes and new features players would like. In general, they want to modernize the game and provide an improved gaming experience. Trion Worlds plans to maintain the Free2Play model, but they are considering a progression system based on earnable resources. All content should also be earnable.

Destiny 2 is “to blame” for not having a sequel
The developers explain that the decision to revamp Defiance rather than develop a sequel is due to Destiny 2. The base game of Defiance is very good, so a sequel would not make much sense. Destiny 2 is essentially the same game as part 1, just with new content. The developers of Defiance wanted to avoid this problem.
Trion Worlds explicitly states that they do not intend to simply offer the existing Defiance for current consoles. It is meant to be an improved, modernized, and revamped version in which fans now have the opportunity to express what changes and adaptations they would like to see. What happens with the old version is unclear. Trion Worlds has no plan in this regard yet.
No release date has been set for the “new” Defiance yet.
The online shooter Defiance is still alive. The previous version also continues to host events.
