With a two-week delay, the PS4 version of the online shooter Defiance 2050 was released on July 25 in the German PS Store. But there’s trouble again: The game is not free in Germany.
Free2Play for 19.99 Euro
A Free2Play game is becoming paid for PS4: Players are angry that the PS4 version of Defiance 2050 costs money in Germany.
This is because the shooter received an “18+” rating from the USK. However, games without a youth release may not be offered for free in the PSN Store. Generally, this wouldn’t be a problem, if it weren’t for the price that Trion Worlds is charging.
High price for the basically free game: 19.99 Euro is what Trion Worlds demands for the base package. This is the minimum requirement to be able to play the online shooter – at least in Germany on the PS4. Many find this price too high. Especially since the game has so far not received particularly good ratings.
Warframe does it better. The online game Warframe also received an USK rating “18+” and therefore cannot be offered for free in the PSN Store. But here the developers used a little trick. They sell the title for just one Euro. Players understand this and are willing to pay this small amount.
On Xbox still Free2Play. Microsoft has linked the purchase of games “18+” to the “Xbox Live Gold” membership. Only those who have such a membership and thus prove that they are at least 18 years old can download free games without a youth rating. Therefore, in the Xbox Store, it is only possible to acquire Defiance 2050 if one has a corresponding Xbox Live subscription.
The players feel cheated
Players are angry: How Trion Worlds is dealing with the German PS4 version of Defiance 2050 has led to criticism. Many perceive the amount of 19.99 Euro as a cheek and therefore express their displeasure freely via social channels. Also on Mein-MMO:
- OnlyAReader writes: “PS4…. For the Players? It’s funny that it’s free on Xbox, but Sony Germany can’t manage that.”
- Troy says: “WTF? So angry. Will not support this. :-(“
- Kristian Steiffen believes: “I understand that developers want/need to be paid for their work, and therefore I am the last one to say they shouldn’t spend money on a F2P or B2P game if it is fun and they want to honor the work put into it. But with all love…..this game has been so bad that I wouldn’t even take it if it was given to me.”
