The indie MMORPG Soul’s Remnant invites you to a free playtest. Here’s what you need to do.
This is Soul’s Remnant: Behind the cute game lies a 2D MMORPG focused on platforming and gameplay. You take on the role of a little spirit, exploring the vast world of Soul’s Remnant.
The game is a solo project of the hobby developer chaomoon, who has been working on it for over 6 years. It is completely free-to-play and does not feature a cash shop or other monetization options. Instead, fans of the game can voluntarily support the dev on Patreon.
Here’s how you can try Soul’s Remnant: The open playtest of the game started on December 16. If you want to try Soul’s Remnant, you can do so completely for free by creating an account on the official site:

This is how Soul’s Remnant plays: The 2D MMORPG has no fixed classes but an upgrade system. The combat system in Soul’s Remnant is not particularly complex and resembles the earlier 2D Zelda games. Killing monsters grants you EXP, and upon leveling up, you receive 5 points that can be allocated to various stats:
- Strength increases physical damage
- Dexterity increases the crit rate and damage of ranged weapons
- Intelligence increases magical damage
- Stamina increases HP and defense
- Spirit increases MP and MP regeneration
- Luck increases drop rates and reduces the amount of lost EXP upon death
Additionally, you receive a skill point when leveling up. If you collect several of them, you can use them along with some materials to unlock various skills. This applies to all types of skills, from combat to gathering skills.
Another way to customize your character is the “Monster Mastery System.” It’s basically a “death counter” for the monsters you’ve defeated in the game. After a certain number, you unlock various bonuses, such as bonus EXP.
The dungeons in Soul’s Remnant must be unlocked with items dropped by monsters in the open world. After unlocking, you can explore them in a group of up to 4 players and defeat the bosses inside.
This is new in the playtest: The developer chaomoon announced new content for the open playtest. These include:
- 2 new areas
- 3 new bosses and 14 new types of monsters
- 31 new items and 94 crafting recipes
- 1 new dungeon and a new “Dungeon Event System”
- Weather and more
In the official Discord of Soul’s Remnant, you can look for groups, but keep in mind that the indie project is only available in English. If you are not proficient in the language, it is advisable to gather some friends and explore together.
