In the survival game Valheim there is a new trend among players: space travel. By that, we don’t mean the cool spaceships that players build, but a “Viking Space Program.” Players use catapults to launch themselves into the air and try to go as high or as far as possible.
What are those crazies up to? New videos from players launching themselves into the air keep appearing on the Valheim subreddit and on YouTube. They build ramps and have a friend launch them forward with a taut rope.
Through various constructions, they either reach particularly great heights or are flung far over the oceans. In one of the biggest threads, the creator humorously names his project “Viking Space Program”:
Building human catapults in Valheim – Here’s how
How does it work? The construction is actually quite simple and consists of only three important parts:
- roofs as a ramp
- a door
- and a harpoon used by a friend
The launched player is skewered with the harpoon and then closes the door in front of them. Apparently, PvP must be activated for this. The puller moves as far away from the “munition” towards the ramp as possible, and when the direction and distance are right, the skewered player opens the door.
Through the tension of the harpoon, they are then pulled forward and flung over the ramp. You can find the harpoon in the ocean by harvesting chitin from krakens. It is not one of the best weapons in Valheim, but it’s useful for exactly such purposes. With the right setup, you can also be launched over great distances:
As you can see, some of the experiments can also end fatally…
And why do they do it? Because they can. Sounds strange, but it’s probably the most plausible explanation. Valheim offers many opportunities for players to express themselves. Those who have already hunted and defeated all the bosses in the game or are more interested in the building aspect quickly come up with such crazy ideas. Or they build even wilder structures.
Catapults and spaceships in Valheim
In line with this space program, other players have taken it upon themselves to recreate spaceships. One player with particularly great skill has recreated a Millennium Falcon from Star Wars, while another has attempted to create the “USS Valheim,” a copy of the famous Enterprise from Star Trek:
If you want to recreate something like this, you need to pay special attention to one value: stability. Without it, your houses will collapse. In our guide, you can find out how to build better and more stable houses.
If spaceships and catapults don’t appeal to you, you can also build traditional longhouses, mead halls, or taverns – your creativity knows no bounds. If you’re looking for inspirations, you can find 3 cool bases that can serve as inspiration for your own in Valheim.
