The visual novel “Slay the Princess” was perhaps one of the most surprising horror hits of 2023, enjoying “extremely positive” reviews on Steam. Now, the developers say that the game is best experienced firsthand – even if it means using illegal means.
What game is it about? In Slay the Princess, you have the simple task of visiting a cottage in the woods and killing the princess trapped in the basement of the house. But of course, nothing is as it seems, and soon you find yourself in a multi-layered psychological horror.
The surprise hit enjoys an extremely positive rating of 97% on Steam and also thrilled MeinMMO demon Cortyn. Slay the Princess was developed by Black Tabby Games, which is the brainchild of the couple Abby Howard and Tony Howard-Arias.

What do the developers say? In a post on the official X account (formerly Twitter), the developers reach out to potential players who are just discovering Slay the Princess. They state that the game is best experienced when playing it yourself, rather than watching someone else’s playthrough.
If money issues are preventing players from experiencing the game themselves, the developers have an unusual solution: “Pirate it.”
What demand do the developers have? So although the developers would prefer players to download Slay the Princess illegally rather than watching a Let’s Play on YouTube, they still have a request: anyone who enjoyed the game should simply buy it at a later time when the money is available.
If money is a problem, aside from piracy, there is currently still the option to purchase the game with a 10% discount in the Winter Sale on Steam.
