A start-up from Tokyo, Japan, has now revealed a massive mech controlled by a pilot. This allows the dreams of people to come true who have always wanted to be a pilot in MechWarrior or BattleTech, if they have the necessary funds. The CEO wants to illustrate what Japan stands for with the mech.
What kind of device is this?
- The mech is called Archax: The device is about 4.5 meters tall and weighs 3.5 tons. The mech is named after the dinosaur Archaeopteryx.
- The mech has a vehicle mode in which it rolls on 4 wheels and reaches about 9.6 km/h, and a robot mode in which it stands.
- The mech is set to be presented at a Japanese mobility fair in October: Ryo Yoshida, the CEO of Tsubame Industries, plans to sell 5 of the mechs for about 2.8 million euros each.
In gaming, mechs are popular combat companions, in real life not:
Mech to be used in disaster relief
What is such a mech good for? In sci-fi epics like BattleTech, mechs serve as huge combat robots that decide wars in a world where nuclear, biological and chemical weapons are frowned upon. In this world, mech pilots duel like knights of yore in battles on the battlefield while controlling the huge colossi.
Or they use mechs to stop huge Godzilla-like aliens, as in Pacific Rim.
In the real world, the CEO of the Japanese start-up Tsubame Industries dreams of his mechs being used for disaster relief – or maybe in the space industry.
The CEO Reo Yoshida says he wanted to combine elements of Japan’s strengths in animation, robotics, and automotive engineering in his merch Archax.
He wanted to create something that says ‘This is Japan.’
His inspiration apparently came from the Japanese animation series ‘Gundam.’
He was fascinated by metalworking as a child and learned in his father’s business before founding a company that specializes in prosthetic hands.
