After a playlist update in Call of Duty: Warzone, players discovered a mysterious machine on the map. Leaks suggest a major event and connections to a new zombie mode in Black Ops Cold War.
What’s going on in CoD? Some new leaks and discoveries in Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty: Warzone indicate a shared zombie event that may happen in Season 2 of both titles simultaneously.
However, keep in mind that much of the information in this article is based on leaks and is not confirmed. Whether or how things will eventually come to the game is officially unconfirmed.
A new zombie event is emerging in Warzone
What has been discovered about Warzone? On the evening of February 11, a playlist update for Call of Duty: Warzone went online. In addition to new modes, unusual content was also introduced. In the Mega Team Deathmatch “Warzone-Rumble”, soldiers found a mysterious machine at the spot “Hospital”:
This is a challenge terminal from the zombie mode of Cold War. Currently, the part has no function in Warzone. Although there is a button that shows “Activate Zombies” when approached, nothing happens when it is pressed.
But there’s more. Even on Rebirth Island, the smaller map of Warzone, there have been mysterious events since the playlist update. Players randomly experience a distortion of their screen while moving around the map:
The audio track could also hint at zombies. You can hear a Morse code and in the background sounds that resemble a large zombie horde searching for their next brain snack.
Both findings suggest another zombie event in Warzone, like the cool Halloween event last year.
Outbreak as the new zombie mode for Cold War in the event
How does this relate to Cold War? Some leaks hinted at the bridge to Cold War that were spread during the night of February 11 to 12 by Twitter account @ZestyCODLeaks. In several tweets, the account released snippets of text found in the CoD files:
Tweet translation: “Fight against the zombie horde in Warzone and Outbreak, the brand-new Black Ops Cold War Zombies mode.”
Additionally, the leakers found challenges that you can complete during the event to earn event rewards:
- Warzone
- Eliminate X zombies in Warzone before the first circle closes
- Eliminate X times 5 zombies in a Warzone match
- Use primary equipment in Warzone to eliminate X zombies
- Quickly kill X times 2 zombies in Warzone
- Use pistols to eliminate X zombies in Warzone
- Use shotguns to eliminate X zombies in Warzone
- Cold War
- Open X crates in Outbreak
- Eliminate X elite zombies in Outbreak
- Achieve X successful evacuations in Outbreak
- Kill X zombies in Outbreak
- Complete X objectives in Outbreak
- Eliminate X special zombies in Outbreak
- Use vehicles in Outbreak to eliminate X zombies
- Warp X times in Outbreak
- Complete all challenges in Outbreak
The account also shows another challenge text that connects the rewards from both modes and provides a hint about a shared event: “Complete all the tasks of the Warzone and Outbreak challenges to unlock two exclusive event weapon blueprints.”
New info aligns with leaks from recent days
How might Outbreak play out? In recent days, leaks about the new mode have emerged, which have been described by some US news sites as an “open-world zombie mode” (via Dexerto).
According to this, “Outbreak” takes place on the large Fireteam maps and is a PvE mode where you hunt zombies while completing specific objectives. This would also fit with the new information known from the leaked challenge texts about Outbreak.
How does this relate to Warzone? It is currently difficult to assess whether there will be any new features for the event in Warzone. While the challenges suggest zombies, they otherwise do not indicate any new gameplay features that will come to the game with the event.
As the challenges currently appear, they could also be completed in a round of “Zombie Royale”, which was online during the last Halloween event. Although this is a special mode that turns players into zombies in the match, it’s not anything new.
Warzone and Outbreak on the same map?
That would be a real surprise: Players have long been anticipating a new large map for the birthday of Warzone in March rumored to combine several Fireteam maps from Cold War. The map would take place in the Ural Mountains.
It could be possible that Warzone will bring the new map with the shared event in March, while “Outbreak” launches concurrently. “Outbreak” would also utilize this large, new map as “open-world”. Both modes would then play on the same map and share similar gameplay features. The Fireteam mode of Cold War already has many Warzone mechanics such as armor plates, loot crates, or even teammates who go down and can be revived.
You would then have the opportunity to play on the same map with different rules in two different games. That would be something completely new, but for now, it’s still just a vague assumption.
When could the event start? This is still completely unclear. The leaker of the “open-world zombie mode” Outbreak, Twitter account @Okami13_, speaks of “Coming soon”. A release at the start of Season 2, which is expected to begin at the end of February, is possible.
However, an event at the season start would be rather unusual, making a mid-season start in March more likely. This would also align with the birthday of Warzone, which celebrated its release on March 10, 2020.
