The free battle royale Call of Duty: Warzone took off like a bomb in 2020. For 3 years, Warzone was fed with content, although the long support was not actually planned. This led to problems and the loss of many players.
With a second part, the developers at Infinity Ward and Raven Software want to do better. The experiences and feedback from the last years are taken into account in the successor Warzone 2.0.
We are gathering everything you need to know about the Warzone successor in this article. The article is divided into 5 sections, and with one click you can get to the information you want:
- Release info, preload/download
- Map, Content & DMZ mode
- Changes to Warzone 1
- Warzone and CoD MW2

You can check out the map of Warzone 2.0 already in CoD MW2. We also have a short overview in the video:
Warzone 2.0: Release Info – Date, Platforms, Trailer
The release is on November 16 and starts together with the Season 1 of Modern Warfare 2.
At 7 PM it begins.
You can already download Warzone 2. Here you can find information about downloading on all platforms.
No, there is no test phase before the release.
Yes, the new battle royale is again a free-to-play title and a part of Modern Warfare 2.
Like CoD MW2, Warzone 2 also supports the old platforms and will be on PC. Warzone 2 will be released for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and on PC in the Battle.net launcher and on Steam.
It works like in Warzone 1. You start Warzone 2.0 via the launcher of Modern Warfare 2 but can choose which parts of the game you want to download.
Also, the progression systems work together: account level, weapon level, battle pass – everything can be leveled in both games. Later, Warzone: Mobile will also be added.
Warzone 2 offers a FoV slider on consoles. In Warzone 1, this setting is missing on PlayStation and Xbox, which is criticized by many players.
The anti-cheat system RICOCHET is now a fundamental part of Call of Duty. Warzone 2 and CoD MW2 will support the system from day one.
You can already see a lot of gameplay of the new Warzone on YouTube. At the big event ‘CoD Next’ over 200 streamers were allowed to play a few rounds already.
In addition, another streamer event has taken place, where the new DMZ mode was also presented in more detail.
Warzone 2.0: Map, Content, Game modes
What does the new map look like? The map was revealed during the event stream “CoD Next” – it is called Al Mazrah and offers a desert flair:
It is the largest map of Warzone so far, surpassing the two predecessors Verdansk and Caldera in this regard. We have gathered the first reactions to Warzone 2 and the map here for you.
The map is full of locations that remind players of old CoD maps. The highlights currently include “Highrise” in Al Mazrah City and “Terminal” at the Airport.
The following maps from CoD MW2 are also part of the new Warzone map:
- Al Bagra Fortress
- Embassy
- Zarqwa Hydroelectric
- Taraq
- Sariff Bay
- Sa’id
What content does Warzone 2 offer? Currently, we know of two major game modes:
- Battle Royale
- DMZ mode
It is also known that the small maps “Fortune’s Keep” and “Rebirth Island” will be completely removed for now. In Warzone 1, they will not be playable after the release of WZ 2, and there are no announcements regarding the small maps for the new Warzone.
However, we know that the long-mysterious DMZ mode is part of Warzone 2. This mode has similar rules to the hardcore shooter “Escape from Tarkov” or the PvEvP mode “Hazard Zone” from Battlefield 2042.
You start at one point on a large map and must fight your way to an exit. Real players and NPCs will make life difficult for you along the way.
Essentially, it is a CoD version of the popular extraction shooters that have captured the shooter market in recent years. However, we still do not have a clear idea of how DMZ plans to stand out from the competition.
With Hazard Zone, Escape from Tarkov, and Hunt: Showdown, there are already similar approaches. The so-called extraction shooters.
Warzone 2.0: Changes Compared to Warzone 1
What changes does Warzone 2 offer? The successor has redesigned almost all mechanics and is a whole new battle royale. The aim was not just to deliver a polished Warzone but to overhaul everything, improve it, and also incorporate player feedback.
Additionally, you will find the new gunsmith in Warzone 2.0, which is also featured in Modern Warfare 2. We have a detailed explanation about it here for you:
Warzone 2.0 and Modern Warfare 2 – The Dream Team
Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 are one game. Just like with CoD MW 2019 and Warzone 1. The two shooters also share new content such as weapons or season stories. As usual, you can level up the battle pass in both games – even Warzone Mobile is part of the level connection.
As both CoDs, MW2 and Warzone 2.0, share the same technology, the new features from Modern Warfare 2 will also be implemented in the game. Here are some of the most important mechanics:
- Water becomes a core feature
- Deeper vehicle mechanics
- A new, deeper gunsmith
- More movement options
- Improved artificial intelligence
- New equipment, such as deployable cameras
If you play CoD MW2, you will encounter the same gameplay feel in Warzone 2 and all the new features will also come to the battle royale. If you want to learn more about the new features, check it out here:
What happens to Warzone 1 and my cosmetics?
Will Warzone 1 continue? The old Warzone will continue, but it will go offline for 12 days and then return as Warzone: Caldera. However, Rebirth Island and Fortune’s Keep will disappear.
What happens to my cosmetics? Warzone 2.0 starts with an empty inventory. All cosmetics and contents from Warzone 1 will no longer be available to you.
With the quite extensive information, one can already get a good picture of what Warzone 2 will look like. We at MeinMMO keep an eye on the situation around Warzone 2 and will update the article as soon as there is new information.
