Who doesn’t know the NPCs that either don’t react at all or respond completely inappropriately to player actions? In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, this is supposed to change, according to the narrative game designer.
NPCs often create funny or annoying situations in games. When you aim a shotgun at them, it often goes unmentioned. If you deliberately shoot them, a “Watch your targets!” follows. While sneaking, they sometimes shout “Reload!” into the room.
In an interview with The Guardian, the developers provided insight into how NPCs will behave in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 during combat. The narrative game designer Shelby Carleton says: “Characters should always react as themselves.”
At gamescom 2023, gameplay of a mission in CoD Modern Warfare 3 was presented. You can watch the video here:
Companions should appropriately respond to the various situations in the game
This is how NPCs are supposed to behave: Players should be able to choose their own playstyle in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – from tactical to full weapon use. The players will be accompanied and supported by NPCs, who are supposed to comment on the approach appropriately.
The narrative game designer Shelby Carleton says to The Guardian:
We had to adjust the narrative so that all these different situations make sense, and the characters should always react as themselves. So, if you play as Price and [teammate] Ghost is with you, he will be able to support you, whether you proceed loudly or in stealth mode, and he will say and do things tailored to those situations.

This could primarily refer to the open combat missions, which according to callofduty.com are supposed to provide “more gameplay freedom”.
The beta of Modern Warfare 3 starts in October. You can find all the info about the open beta and its content at MeinMMO.
What are the open combat missions? In the open combat missions in Modern Warfare 3, you should be able to decide how you want to proceed. Although gamescom 2023 showed a trailer with 8 minutes of gameplay from the campaign, the open combat missions were left out.
In doing so, one could have made the most of the Open Night Live and the large audience for a real highlight, thinks MeinMMO editor Maik:
CoD MW3 shows the wrong 8 minutes of the campaign – Why are they hiding the highlight?
