Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 offers extensive crossplay features and connects consoles with PC – allowing us all to play together. To bring mouse and keyboard and controller to a similar level, there is an aim assist for controllers. It seems to be very strong this year.
Call of Duty has achieved something that no other AAA franchise could achieve before: somehow, they managed to convince Sony in 2019 to relax their stance on crossplay and brought CoD MW 2019 with full crossplay support to PlayStation.
A milestone. Sony had always been quite opposed to such features that blur the boundaries between platforms.
To ensure that controller players do not fully feel the advantages of players with mouse & keyboard, aim assist is helpful. In the genre comparison, Call of Duty has been providing a very strong aim assist for a PvP game for years and this always leads to discussions.
With Modern Warfare 2, the aim assist seems to be shifting into a higher gear again. Early evaluations suggest that the assist is very strong. In our research, we came across quite a few players who have already switched from mouse & keyboard to controller.
A clip on Twitter illustrates the situation quite well. After several kills with the controller, the streamer says: ‘This is basically cheating’:
Whether the aim assist is truly significantly stronger this year is still not entirely assessable at this point. However, there are already some reactions pointing to that.

CoD MW2: Aim Assist – Function and Settings
How does the aim assist work? First: The aim assist on the controller does not take away the aiming from you. The function activates only under certain circumstances and can be divided into two categories in Call of Duty:
- Aim Slowdown
- If the crosshair is near the target, the sensitivity of aiming is reduced.
- This creates a sort of stick effect, and it feels like the crosshair sticks a bit near the opponent.
- Applies to hip fire and ADS.
- Aim Rotation
- When you move, your character rotates with the opponent.
- This assist only works when you are moving!
- Sometimes you may turn sideways when an opponent runs through the crosshair.
- Also active in hip fire and ADS.
The individual factors are adjusted slightly each year. That’s why the aim assist feels slightly different from CoD title to CoD title. Perhaps snipers are also so strong this year due to the aim assistance.
Which settings should I use? If you are on controllers, you should definitely use the aim assist. It is not a guarantee to be good but immensely supports your accuracy if you know how to use it correctly – for example, when sniping with a controller.
Use the following settings:
- Advanced controller settings
- Aim assist: On
- Aim assist type: Standard / Black Ops
- Aim reaction curve: Standard
- Multiplier: 1.00
- Zoom transition time: Instant

If you have problems aiming and feel that the aim assist works against your playstyle, try different aim reaction curves: ‘Linear’ and ‘Dynamic’ also have their fans.
By the time of the release of Warzone 2.0, the discussions around crossplay and the aim assist are likely to heat up again. Even in the first free battle royale, aim assist was a controversial topic and has been discussed for years.
