The double XP tokens are currently facing harsh criticism in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Players find the functionality simply unfair and are voicing their criticism towards the developers. What’s going wrong?
Why is there criticism? In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, players can earn double XP tokens. These tokens allow you to collect a lot of experience points even outside of double XP weekends. However, only for a limited time. Players say that one has far too little control over this period and time is wasted.
These tokens come in various time categories such as 30 minutes or 45 minutes.
- Positive: During this time, you earn much more experience points and can level up more easily
- Negative: The pure match time is not utilized. Idle time also counts toward the token, making them less efficient
The specific problem is that the token time also runs out when you sit in lobbies and wait. But there are more unfair situations that spoil players’ joy over the otherwise cool XP bonuses.
The token even expires during crashes or updates
This is what players say: On Reddit, Modern Warfare players are currently venting their frustration regarding this. A post from December 4th is titled “And that’s why double XP tokens should only expire in matches.” The user shows a crash screen. His game has crashed. He writes that it is frustrating to earn these tokens only to ultimately lose them in long loading screens, game crashes, server disconnects, and other issues. You can also earn XP tokens in Modern Warfare through Twitch streams.
Even updates can diminish the joy of XP tokens. Another user writes on Reddit, “I used a one-hour double XP token and then came a one-hour update.”
With slow internet connections, whole tokens can be wasted without you really benefiting from them. For many, this is a particularly unfair feature.
This is what players demand: The wish is getting louder that the XP rewards should only focus on the times spent in matches. The time when you actually earn experience points that then double.
User crazydave33 writes on Reddit:
I never understood why this counts down in real-time. It makes no sense because when you’re sitting in the lobby waiting for the games to load, no one earns experience points. So why should it count down? It should only count during actual gameplay. If you’re lucky, with a one-hour XP token, you get 30 minutes of gameplay before it expires.
IW, if you see this, change it so that only gameplay time counts, not real-time.

Others report that they save their XP tokens. In the hope that soon only gameplay time will count for them. “I am a gamer dad with a small child and a baby. My gaming time is tight and sporadic at night. It would be a big risk and most likely a waste for me to use these tokens,” writes man0412 on Reddit.
