Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and the free battle royale Warzone 2.0 come with an unusually high amount of co-op content – Spec-Ops, raids, and DMZ mode provide a break from the PvP routine in multiplayer. We list what PvE content CoD is delivering this year.
Call of Duty is considered a fierce PvP arena, but at its core, it is also a PvE shooter. Apart from Black Ops 4 (2018), there has always been a high-quality story campaign.
Co-op has also been a topic early on. With the zombie mode from World at War (2008), a new branch of CoD was created that still has many fans today.
World at War even allowed you to play the story campaign entirely in co-op. This is not the case with the new Modern Warfare 2, but there are still an unusually high number of co-op modes in CoD 2022.
We will list what PvE modes CoD MW2 offers, how many players you can play with, and when the content is released:
- The campaign: 1 player
- Spec-Ops: 2 players
- Raids: 3 players
- DMZ mode: Unknown

PvE in CoD: The Campaign
How many players are allowed? The story can only be played solo. There is even a challenging mission called “Alone”.
What kind of mode is this? You fight alongside Captain Price and other iconic operators from the “Modern Warfare” series against cartels and terror. The setting is contemporary.
When will the mode be released? For digital pre-orders, the campaign went online on October 20. Everyone else has access with the full release on October 28. All information about the campaign can be found here:
PvE in CoD: Spec-Ops
How many players are allowed? A duo mode for 2 players.
What kind of mode is this? In a two-person team, you complete missions and must support each other.
Not every player takes on the same task. As an example, the developers mention a mission in which one player fights through the area on the ground while the second provides support from an aircraft.
When will the mode be released? With the release of CoD MW2 there are 3 missions:
- Low Profile
- Stealth mission where you gather reconnaissance data
- Denied Area
- Vehicle mission where you must destroy something
- Defender: Mt. Zaya
- Horde mission where more enemies come with each wave
When will the mode be released? Together with Warzone 2.0 on November 16. The Modern Warfare 2 Season 1 will also kick off at that time.
Modern Warfare 2 and the new Warzone game offer a lot of content for cooperative adventures. Only fans of the zombie modes will be disappointed; however, the first Warzone has often held events with zombies.

PvE in CoD: Raids
How many players are allowed? 3 players.
What kind of mode is this? This is a new type of PvE mode for Call of Duty. According to initial information, they resemble MMO raids like in Destiny.
- Intense battles
- Challenging puzzles
- Long duration, several hours
You can find more information about the mode on MeinMMO, as soon as the raids are available.
When will the mode be released? The raids are planned for mid-season 1, starting on December 14.
PvE in CoD: DMZ Mode
How many players are allowed? Probably 1 to 4 players, but this has not yet been confirmed.
What kind of mode is this? The mode is part of Warzone 2.0 and thus Free2Play. Call of Duty is entering the market of extraction shooters, so it is a PvEvP mode.
Similar to Escape from Tarkov or Hunt: Showdown, you land on a large map, complete tasks, and must try to leave the map alive.
Along the way, you will encounter NPCs at locations with varying difficulty levels and loot availability, as well as hostile players who want to get their hands on your loot. All details have not yet been clarified.
When will the mode be released? Together with Warzone 2.0 on November 16. The Modern Warfare 2 Season 1 will also kick off at that time.
